โ€‹Long before it was a national program, the system was inspired by Davao Cityโ€™s Lingap para sa Mahirap program. During Rodrigo Duterte's time as Mayor, B**g Go (then his personal aide) observed a recurring problem: patients from all over Mindanao would flock to Davao City for treatment at the Southern Philippines Medical Center (SPMC).

โ€‹๐“๐ก๐ž "๐€๐ก๐š!" ๐Œ๐จ๐ฆ๐ž๐ง๐ญ
โ€‹The turning point came when the Commission on Audit (COA) questioned why Davao City funds were being used to help non-residents. This frustrated then-Mayor Duterte, who told B**g Go to "find a way" to help everyone regardless of their address.
โ€‹They realized that the biggest hurdle for the poor wasn't just the lack of money, but the exhausting bureaucracy. Patients had to travel to different offices (PCSO, DSWD, PhilHealth) across the city just to gather enough signatures for a single hospital bill.

The "one-stop-shop" concept was first tested in Davao through Pagkalinga sa Bayan (now the Lingap Center), which put all these agencies in one building beside SPMC.

The official "Malasakit Center" branding was first launched on February 12, 2018, at the Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center in Cebu City.

On September 24, 2018, the Malasakit Center was officially launched in Davao City (the 9th in the country), effectively merging with the existing local Lingap services.

After seeing the success of the "one-stop-shop" model in Davao City, B**g Go made the establishment of Malasakit Centers one of his primary legislative priorities when he was elected to the Senate in 2019.

โ€‹๐“๐ก๐ž ๐‹๐š๐ฐ:
In 2019, the program was institutionalized through Republic Act No. 11463 (the Malasakit Centers Act), ensuring that every DOH-run hospital in the country would have one.

It was chosen to reflect the Filipino value of malasakit (compassion), specifically the idea that the government should go to the people, not the other way around.

The Malasakit Center at SPMC remains one of the busiest in the country, serving not just Dabawenyos but patients from as far as Zamboanga and Surigao.

๐ƒ๐ˆ๐ƒ ๐˜๐Ž๐” ๐Š๐๐Ž๐– that the nationwide Malasakit Center program has already helped over 10 million Filipinos and still counting?
