𝗙𝗹𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗶𝗻 𝗢𝗯𝗿𝗲𝗿𝗼, 𝟭𝟵𝟲𝟬𝘀

I am taking a quick break from my work. Speaking of the heavy flood, it reminds me of something. Here is a photo of some residents in Obrero at the corner of Clarin and Porras Streets during the flood. This photo comes from the contributor's grandmother's family album. The scene was possibly taken in the 1960s.

We learn from historian Antonio Figueroa that Barrio Obrero had its beginnings in the pre-Commonwealth period. The idea was to set aside parcels of land to be developed into villages for working men.

And let me tell you a collective memory from my personal journal about Obrero's surrounding areas. In old maps of Davao, the area from Trading Boulevard, Sta. Ana, Agdao all the way to Obrero was a swampy or marshy and mangrove area. In fact, in Ubalde and R. Castillo roads, there were plenty of Pagatpat trees.

At high tide, seawater would come in, bringing with it fish like ibis, bugaong, wild tilapia, and the water snake called tangkig. Of course, there were also crabs like kuray, katang, and alimango.

In Obrero alone, sometime in the past, some college students who stayed in boarding houses fondly recalled how they would put their shoes in a basin floating in dirty water, so they could wear them the next morning.

I wonder how many parts of the city have still experienced flooding since the 1960s or even earlier. I want to learn from urban planners. And the two young men from the right? They are so wet in the rain. — 𝘕𝘦𝘪𝘭 𝘛𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘴
