RAFTS LOADED WITH VINEGAR AND "TUBANG SASA" FROM BULACAN TO MANILA – CA. 1900s-1920s

This fascinating image captures a significant aspect of trade during the early 1900s in the Philippines. It shows rafts laden with barrels of vinegar and "tubang sasa" (sasa sap), making their way from Bulacan to Manila. The scene highlights a vital trade route in the country, where goods, particularly vinegar, a staple in Filipino cooking, were transported via waterways. The rafts, simple yet functional, are constructed with bamboo and wooden planks, designed for transporting goods across rivers and through coastal routes.

Vinegar, an essential part of Filipino cuisine, was a valuable commodity, and "tubang sasa," derived from the sap of the sasa palm, served multiple purposes in traditional Filipino society. The transportation of these goods by raft reflects the ingenuity of the local people in utilizing available resources to create effective transportation solutions. The image provides insight into the commerce, agriculture, and resourcefulness of the Filipinos during this period.

The scene also serves as a reminder of the strong connections between rural communities and urban centers like Manila, where goods from various provinces were traded and distributed. The quiet, natural beauty of the river and the simple yet hardworking raftsmen all come together to tell the story of a time when local trade was the backbone of the Filipino economy.
