Annotation: In this final scene of bird box, Malorie leaves with the kids preparing for a 2-day journey on the river. They run into a psycho on the way whom she overcomes. They stop to restock supplies and blankets as the boat tumbles. Finally, as they arrive at the rapids, Malorie explains to the kids that one of them is going to have to look to ensure they make it. Boy offers to look, and Malorie says she will choose who is to see. Girl, too, offers to look. It seems like Malorie was planning to have Girl do the peeking because itβs not her own child, but she remembers her promise to Olympia to take care of her daughter. She decides they are going to attempt to do the rapids with their blindfolds on. In the final run, the rapids are harsh, the boat tumbles. Malorie first rescued the boy and attempted to reach out the girl with blindfolds off (but the girl didn't even try to open her eyes as she knows what will happen if she tried to), and they miraculously all survived β even the birds in the box.
Obviously, the story's emphasis on the sense of sight serves as both a crucial theme and a crucial lesson. We are overly reliant on it. We do not allow ourselves the time or opportunity to be introspective and learn more about who we really are and how we feel, nor do we allow ourselves the use of our other senses to enrich our lives and emotions. That was Malorie's main obstacle. Even though she portrayed the world from her point of view as an artist, she had no perspective on herself and didn't let anyone else in on who she was. She is the bird at this moment, and throughout the film, her soul floats to nowhere, illustrating that the thing she need was not one that could be gained by sight, but rather one that could be gained through feelings and emotions, which ultimately helped her to attain real freedom in the end.
The participants chose this scene as it shows how people strive and work hard to survive and achieve freedom rather than sitting still and doing nothing. Therefore Malorie, the novel's protagonist, left a lasting impression on us through her words. She said, βItβs better to face madness with a plan than to sit still and let it take you to pieces.".
