This is important because whatever you have normalized is what will continue to feel familiar to you. And familiarity will feel like destiny until you look a little closer."

The truth is I was that person who held on to struggle like a badge of honor.

That was me for most of my life; proving just how much pain I could handle and feeling proud that I could sustain so much. Not consciously, of course. But somewhere along the way I began to believe that life was all about struggle and survival; that only the strongest people with the highest pain tolerance succeed. And, like a self-fulfilling prophecy, guess what my mind was always focused on? You guessed it: struggle as a measure of accomplishment.

The truth is 10 years ago I would have never even dared to imagine the blissful moments I get to live now with my partner. Not because I didn’t want it—God knows I’ve been looking for my dream partner since my teenage years—but because my nervous system didn’t have the capacity to want so much from life (nor did I have the genuine trust that I was worthy of receiving so much).

Back then, I didn’t dare to want what I truly wanted because my nervous system wasn’t wired to trust in that much joy. Not surprisingly, I developed beliefs to match that limitation:

“The more you want, the more you’re setting up for disappointment” or “Some things are just too good to be true.”

Today I know better: now I know that knowing what you want is divine protection. Because it keeps you from entertaining relationships, projects, environments and conversations that are simply not for your highest good.

When you pretend you don’t know what you want to avoid disappointment, you mute your own signal. It’s a self-fulfilling prophecy.
