I am Ann-Christine Nkwain. I am a Journalist and an Entrepreneur, a beautician to be precise. I am known as Annie’s Braids.
I am a participant in the ongoing RevUp Women initiative program cohort 1 taking place in Yaoundé Cameroon, a program meant to empower early stage women-led enterprises in Africa.

My business name is AnnieBraids Beauty, I am based in Yaounde and I beautify people for a living 😊. I didn’t always plan to become a full time beautician. Had a passion for it but I really loved to practice what I studied in the university (Journalism).

This business Idea was inspired by frustration and the need to be independent and the need to do something for myself that could help others in the long run. After graduation from UB (UNIVERSITY OF BUEA) "The Place To Be" in 2018, I did internships and deposited documents in several places in search for a job but didn’t get one. Someone may think 3years in the job market isn’t much time but I was completely dependent and it was no longer healthy for me. Then I decided to use my passion to help myself at the moment and others in the long run.

I learned how to braid, not any kind of braiding, modern braids and everything about hair perfectly. As time went on, i learned makeup, everything about wigs and Im ready to learn even more. I equally train young girls now interested in learning these services because I believe every girl needs to have a skill so they create jobs for themselves rather than wait for the government and other individuals to employ them.

There is a need by women in my community to enjoy the new braiding styles that come up every day. To be able to pay for these services and be satisfied with what they get in return.
Most especially, there is need by the girl child in my community to have a skill, a need by a displaced woman and girl to have something doing that generates them some income and doesn’t leave them completely dependent on their families or spouses, and this despite their educational background.
This is the problem I am solving in my community.

The main challenge I face as a female entrepreneur is limited access to funding for my business and lack of support networks to help me grow my business.
At the moment, I have no other responsibilities apart from the business I run, so managing my. work-life balance is quite simple.

It is important for me to expand my business because in the past 2 years, my customer base has greatly increased and there is need to upgrade. I need to expand so I can employ more workers, get new opportunities, get more clients, get better training space for my students, and of course, survive in the business market.
