CAGAPE's CRISP Greens
Hydroponics and containerized garden
14/05/2026
CAGAPE's CRISP GREENS turned into a vibrant learning hub on May 13, 2026 as members of FMSR and RIC, led by President MARK LEISAR M. MAGHALIN (FMSR) and President MA ENONE G. DELA CUEVA (RIC), joined an Educational Field Tour focused on value adding in agriculture.
The group actively explored the greenhouse setup, where hydroponic systems and value-adding practices were tackled.
Beyond the technical learning, the visit sparked excitement and inspiration among the participants, showing that agriculture is not just about planting, but about creativity, enterprise, and opportunity. The tour ended with renewed enthusiasm and a deeper appreciation for modern farming practices that blend sustainability with innovation.

Why lettuce can taste a bit bitter (and why that’s okay):
🥬 Natural plant defense
Lettuce produces compounds (like sesquiterpene lactones) that naturally taste bitter. These help protect the plant from pests and harsh conditions.
☀️ Response to heat and stress
When exposed to high temperatures, strong sunlight, or limited water, lettuce increases these compounds. It’s the plant’s way of adapting, not a defect.
🌼 Maturity or bolting stage
As lettuce ages or starts to bolt (prepare to flower), bitterness becomes more noticeable. This is a normal part of its life cycle.
💧 Still safe and nutritious
Bitterness does not mean spoiled or unsafe. In fact, slightly bitter lettuce can still be fresh, healthy, and rich in nutrients.
Simple takeaway:
👉 A little bitterness in lettuce is natural, it reflects how the plant grows and responds to its environment.

Best Practices in Hydroponics
🌱 Balanced Nutrients
Plants in hydroponics rely completely on the nutrient solution.
Make sure your mix has the right balance of macro (N, P, K) and micro nutrients. Too much or too little can stunt growth or damage leaves.
⚖️ Optimal pH & EC
* pH (around 5.5–6.5) helps plants absorb nutrients properly.
* EC (Electrical Conductivity) measures nutrient strength.
If pH or EC is off, plants won’t grow well even if nutrients are present.
🧼 Clean & Sterile
Always keep your system clean:
* Wash reservoirs, pipes, and tools regularly
* Prevent algae, bacteria, and disease buildup
Clean systems = healthy plants.
🌬️ Good Air Circulation
Airflow helps:
* Prevent mold and fungus
* Strengthen plant stems
* Regulate temperature
Use fans or proper spacing between plants.
💧 Conserve Water
Hydroponics already uses less water, but you can:
* Reuse nutrient solution (if still balanced)
* Fix leaks immediately
* Monitor water levels daily
🐛 Pest Control
Even without soil, pests can still attack:
* Check leaves daily (top and underside)
* Use safe sprays( concoctions, most recommended)
* Remove infected plants early
🌿 Healthy Roots
Roots should be:
* White or light-colored
* Smelling fresh (not rotten)
* Well-oxygenated
Brown, slimy roots mean root rot—act fast!
🔍 Regular Monitoring
Daily observation is key:
* Check plant color, growth, and leaves
* Catch problems early before they spread
🌞 Lighting
Plants need enough light to grow:
* Natural sunlight or grow lights
* Ensure proper distance and duration (usually 10–16 hrs/day)
