[ACNE-PRONE SKIN DIARY ENTRY #5]

THE YEAR MY SKIN CHANGED FOR THE BETTER

Happy New Year! Going into 2023, I couldn't help but think how far I've gone sa acne journey ko. It has been almost 2 years since the worst breakout I've had in a long time nung 2021.

When that year started, I honestly didn't know what else to do but wait. Hindi ko alam kung by the end of that year magcclear up na ba acne ko because of how slow my progress was. I was using prescribed medications na nireseta sakin I think nung 2020 pa, but didn't want to come back kasi ang akala ko same lang naman ang ibibigay. So 3, 4, 5 months passed by and I was seeing very minimal results.

Come May 2021, yung skin ko is what I'm showing to you on my phone in the picture here. I've never had a breakout that bad, na almost every other day tinutubuan talaga ako ng bagong acne. So sabi ko, something's wrong. I need to consult with a derm already.

Little did I know na yung medication na ginagamit ko from 2020 was too weak for my skin already. So my derm made me use stronger medications. And take note! Hindi pa 'to oral meds. I started taking those in 2022. 2021 pa lang ito, and stronger lang na topical (pamahid) medications ang binigay sakin ng derm.

So I stuck to that routine of medications and on December of that same year—meaning mga 6 months lang—my skin improved A LOT. As in kakaiba. I did not expect AT ALL to end that year with clearer and healthier skin.

And that experience taught me two very important lesson in my acne journey: it's important to FOLLOW-UP with your dermatologist if things don't get better. Wag nating isipin that they're just going to give us the same advise over and over again because they're trained to treat to our skin concerns, and surely they will find ways to make it better.

Because even if we think na alam na natin ang lahat about medications and skincare from experience, it still won't compare to an actual expertise of a trained dermatologist. Ako personally, I thought using only one medication would already be enough for my acne—I ended up using a combination of medications, some of which were stronger and more suited to my skin type. And it did me wonders.

So I hope in some way, this could also inspire those with acne to keep going and to keep in touch with their dermatologists. Because sometimes, it could be the key to clearer skin. ✨

Again, thank you so much to Face Forward from Acne for helping me share stories like this that can serve as inspiration & a source of comfort for our acne-prone community here in the Philippines. ❤️
