Wander with Jane

Life lately has been reminding me that sometimes the most beautiful things are the simplest ones.

No filter — just the real roads of 𝐃𝐚𝐯𝐚𝐨 𝐂𝐢𝐭𝐲 leading to Bucana Bridge. A quiet stretch where the sea meets the city, and where man-made roads sit gently beside God’s beautiful creation.

But what really stayed with me yesterday wasn’t just the view.

Earlier that day, I was sitting under the trees at People’s Park right in the heart of the city. Two manongs were sweeping the pathways. Every time they finished clearing a lane, the wind would blow again and scatter countless leaves back onto the ground. They would move to the next area, sweep again… and once more, the wind would carry new leaves down from the trees.

When they reached the area near where I was sitting, the wind swept hundreds of leaves across the ground again. I couldn’t help but giggle. They laughed too and jokingly said,

“𝐃𝐢𝐥𝐢 𝐦𝐢 𝐦𝐚𝐠𝐫𝐞𝐤𝐥𝐚𝐦𝐨, 𝐤𝐚𝐲 𝐤𝐮𝐧𝐠 𝐰𝐚𝐥𝐚 𝐧𝐚 — 𝐰𝐚𝐥𝐚 𝐬𝐚𝐝 𝐦𝐢 𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐛𝐚𝐡𝐨.”

(We won’t complain, because if there’s nothing left to do, we won’t have work.)

And they continued sweeping — smiling and laughing as they worked.

That moment reminded me of something simple yet powerful: the heart of a city is not just in its roads, buildings, or beautiful views. It’s in the people who quietly take pride in the work they do every single day.

Davao is known for being a clean and orderly city, and moments like this show why. It’s not just policy or rules — it’s the discipline, humility, and quiet dedication of the people who care for it.

A clean city is not built overnight. It is maintained every day by people who show up, do their jobs with pride, and respect the place they call home.

And somehow, watching those manongs sweep under the trees made me appreciate this city even more.

As I venture through my mid-twenties, I’m experiencing something new — working away from home for the first time, adjusting to an office setup, and learning how to live life on my own.

It’s been two months since I left the comfort of home — no rent, just bills… and honestly, I didn’t realize how much I took that life for granted.

Now, I’m living alone in a big city where the day never ends and the night never sleeps. And suddenly… I understand what it means when people say:

Back then, I could buy what I wanted, eat what I craved, wake up whenever I felt like it, and work only when my schedule allowed.
But now?

Groceries are planned.
Rent is non-negotiable.
Eating out depends on both time and budget.
And every day feels like a mini accounting session of how much I have left before the next payout.

It’s ironic… a little sad… but also freeing.

Most of all, it’s humbling.

This chapter is teaching me discipline, independence, and the kind of strength you only gain when you’re on your own. And while I know this is only a phase, I also know I’m not meant to stay in survival mode forever.

For now, I’ll keep learning, growing, and wandering through this season of life — one step at a time.
