In my opinion, pathcouli essential oil is underutilized for its digestive benefits. Multiple studies suggest that it or its main constituents contribute to healthy digestion. A preclinical model of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) showed that patchouli essential oil relieves acute colitis symptoms. Further human studies are necessary to determine the best way and how much to use of patchouli, but the preliminary results are promising.

Stress significantly affects multiple aspects of your well-being. As stress levels have increased over the last couple of years people are seeking for natural solutions to destress and better cope with stress. One of the most effective ways to do so is to inhale essential oils. A small clinical study found that inhaling litsea essential oil for 30 minutes via diffuser reduced stress (based on lower salivary cortisol levels) and confusion, and improved mood state.

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a liver conditions characterized by fat inside the liver among people who drink little to no alcohol. Over time, these fat deposits can affect liver function and cause liver damage. Although the cause of NAFLD is not fully understood, it has been linked to overweight/obesity, insulin resistance, diabetes, high blood pressure, high fats (particularly triglycerides) in the blood, and a high-fat diet. Inhaling sweet orange essential oil protected against NAFLD caused by a high-fat diet in a preclinical model of NAFLD. The oil reduced obesity, high triglycerides, total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, and the accumulation of fats in liver cells.

Lavender essential oil is often called the Swiss Army Knife of essential oils because it has so many uses. A recent laboratory study found that lavender reduces the secretion or mRNA expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines, demonstrating it has anti-inflammatory activity. Knowing this, it would be a good option to add to your muscle and joint soothing blends.

I love that essential oils are being tested in more and more hospital and healthcare settings because I believe it improves patient satisfaction and outcomes. An arteriovenous fistula (AVF) connects a vein and an artery in a person’s arm who is undergoing hemodialysis to allow blood to flow from the body into a dialysis machine and back into the same place. AVF cannulation—inserting a flexible catheter into the AVF—is challenging for nurses and painful for the patient.
Researchers evaluated the benefits of inhaling lavender essential oil during AVF cannulation. Subjects inhaled five drops of pure lavender essential oil for five minutes as part of a steam inhalation. The lavender was added to 200 mL of boiled water and placed approximately 30 cm (11.8 inches) away and then the subject completely covered with a cloth. Inhaling the lavender oil significantly reduced AVF puncture-related pain and anxiety.

A recent laboratory study found that lemongrass (Cymbopogon citratus) essential oil has significant antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity. Indeed, its anti-inflammatory activity was comparable to the drug Diclofenac sodium. Further investigation of its molecular docking capabilities in a computer model found that the minor constituent beta-caryophyllene (0.80%) in the oil has considerable binding potential to the peroxiredoxin 5 (PB5) and cyclooxygenase 2 receptor (COX-2) proteins. So much so that the researchers concluded that beta-caryophyllene has a high drug likeness and “can be used as a potential candidate to replace the synthetic anti-inflammatory drugs.”

PB5 is a protein and enzyme found in various tissues that responds to oxidative stress and is involved in the initiation of inflammatory processes. Higher levels of PB5 are noted in people with chronic inflammatory conditions like osteoarthritis, tendonitis, and myasthenia gravis. It has even been implicated in neuroinflammation in people with autism. COX-2 plays a major role in inflammatory reactions and regulates pain responses. Reducing its activity is associated with decreased pain and inflammation.
