Chanca piedra
No herbal garden can be complete without chanca piedra because it is a powerhouse in nature’s pharmacy.

Often we are misled to believe that all the synthetic drugs we have in the pharmacy stores are the result of pure scientific thinking that develops drugs from first principle. No way! Most of them were copied from plants like chanca piedra.

The plant got this beautiful name from Spain; meaning ‘’stone-breaker’’. The Brazilians also call it quebra-pedra which translates to ‘’break-stone’’.

In Nigeria, the Igbos call it ‘’enyikwonwa’’, the Hausas call it ‘’geeron-tsuntsaayee’’, while the Yoruba’s call it ‘’ehin olobe’’
Chanca piedra is a small, erect, wild herb botanically called phyllantus ninuri from the euphabiaceae family. It is one of the most widely used plants in herbal medicine.

Traditionally chanca piedra is used to expel kidney stones, increase urination, reduce inflammation, clears obstruction, reduce diabetes, lower blood pressure, relieve pain, protect the liver, reduce fever, expel worms, and kill viruses and bacteria.

Numerous phytochemical researches have revealed many studied therapeutic chemicals packed in chanca piedra some of which can only be found in this plant. A few of the main plant chemicals include; sapponins, quercetin, alkaloids, brevifolin, ellargic acid, geraniin, ellagitannins, gallocatechins, hypophyllanthin, phyllanthin, phyllanthine, phyllanthenol, niranthin, niruretin, nirurin, niruriside, triocontanol, carboxylic acid,and repandusinic acid.

Chanca piedra is a household name in African and Amazonian herbal medicine. Because of the interest it has generated over 300 scientific and clinical studies have been conducted and documented on its medicinal properties especially in Brazil, US, India, Germany, and Japan.

A 1990 study of the plant in Brazil on humans and rats reported that it promoted the elimination of kidney stones, increased urine output, sodium and creatine elimination.
In 1995, a study involving human subject with high blood pressure, Indian researchers reported a significant reduction in systolic blood pressure, as well as a significant increase in urine volume and sodium excretion.

This hypotensive effect of chanca piedra has been attributed to a specific chemical in the plant called geraniin. In 1996, Brazillian researchers isolated and tested geraniin and established that this chemical is seven times more potent that acetaminophen and aspirin in relieving pain.

In vitro studies conducted in 1999, 2002, and 2003 revealed that the plant can block the formation of calcium oxalate and as result can be used as a preventative therapy for kidney and gallbladder stones formation.

The ability of chanca piedra to protect the liver has been established by numerous studies and scientists have attributed this liver-protecting capability to two specific chemicals found in the plant; phyllanthin and hypophyllanthin.
Emerging new studies have also reported the ability of chanca piedra to protect cellular DNA from the effect of toxic chemicals.

The plant was shown to prevent and slow the growth of tumors, thereby justifying its traditional use to treat cancer especially liver cancer. Chanca piedra don’t kill cancer cells but it can stop or reverse the processes that lead to their formation and proliferation.

Worthy of note is the over twenty scientific studies that have been used to establish the antiviral and antibacterial properties of the plant. Some reported that chanca piedra can effectively be used to protect the liver even during hepatitis B infection. A Japanese study reported that a chemical in the plant named repandusinic acid has a direct effect on the HIV virus.

Even though scientists have taken special interests in some of the chemicals found in chanca piedra, it is still difficult to explain how this plants chemicals synergies to produce the numerous therapeutic responses associated with it. Since it is a known fact that scientific theories usually lag behind people’s daily experiences we should not bother ourselves with the knowledge of all the biochemical interaction of the plant chemicals.

Anecdotal evidence of its use in a pure traditional setting should in most cases be enough.

Those suffering from kidney and gallbladder stones, prostate disorders, viral and bacterial infection, diabetes, and high blood pressure can immensely benefit from this plant with diverse medicinal power.

In Germany, Punarnava is a chanca piedra tablet sold as a diuretic. It is obviously clear that the pharmaceutical industry has been researching on this plant trying to create patentable synthetic analogues of the chemicals found in it.

People with prostate disorders can combine chanca piedra with stinging nettle, bitter almond, and graviola because nature protects itself through the power of biodiversity.
Chanca piedra has hypotensive properties; those that are taking heart prescription medicines should consult their physician before using it.

Chanca piedra is an arbortifacient and as such women who are pregnant, who are trying to conceive and those taking fertility drugs should avoid this herb. This powerful medicinal herb has also been shown to possess hypoglycaemic and diuretic effects.

Those taking diabetic drugs should avoid chanca piedra unless they intend to drop their prescription drugs. Anybody taking diuretic drugs should avoid this herb because it can potentiate them.
But remember that long-term use of diuretics can cause electrolyte and mineral imbalances; this is not good news!
