Our mountains protect us from fierce storms—yet we continue to destroy them.

These mountains, shaped by the Creator’s hand, serve as our natural shield. They absorb the force of strong winds, hold the soil together, and preserve the balance of our environment. But when we carve them without conscience, mine them recklessly, or lay them bare, we weaken the very barrier that keeps our communities safe.

Our forests keep floods at bay—yet we cut them down so easily.

The trees are silent guardians. Their roots drink the rainwater, their branches shelter life, their presence keeps the rivers calm. And still, illegal logging, greed, and carelessness rob our land of this protection. When we destroy forests, we destroy our future.

My dear people, we must change our ways. We cannot keep repeating the same mistakes and expect different results. Creation is not our property to exploit, but God’s gift to nurture. Its wounds are calling out. Creation is crying—and we must listen.

This is a moment of awakening.
A moment to rebuild what we have destroyed. A moment to choose life, not profit; stewardship, not abuse.

Wake up, people of this nation!
Let us return to the heart of our faith—a heart that respects life, protects the poor, and honors the Creator by caring for His creation. Let us plant trees, protect our mountains, guard our rivers, and hold leaders accountable. Let every parish, every family, every youth, and every leader become a guardian of our common home.

As Bishop of the Diocese of Tagbilaran, I call upon every believer in Christ to join the “One Believer, One Tree” campaign, as our way of celebrating the Season of Creation 2024 (from September 1-October 4). Hi there! We would like to invite you to join us for our Beach Clean-up at Momo Beach, Panglao on December 3 from 7:30 am. Please wear comfortable clothes, reef-safe sunscreen, bring reusable gloves and sacks (if you can), and drinking water in reusable bottle. Please DO NOT bring any single use plastic to the cleanup event.
