This is why I always ask during consultation if you’ve used “organic blackening shampoos” or “herbal hair dyes” – because what looks “natural” might actually create serious chemical buildup in the hair.

Black Henna / Henna Shampoo Reality Check:

✔️ Often labeled as “herbal” or “organic”
❌ BUT most brands contain metallic salts, PPD (para-phenylenediamine), or stubborn black pigments
❌ These don’t fade the same way as professional color
❌ They block bleach or lighteners, causing uneven lifting, orange bands, or even chemical reactions during color or rebonding

In this photo, you’ll see how hard it is to extract black henna. Despite multiple clarifying steps, we still see patchy lifting, orange tones, and a stained cuticle.

Why this matters:

If you’ve ever used “black shampoo”, always inform your stylist. We need to assess the hair with a strand test to avoid major damage, or worse — irreversible chemical burns during coloring or rebonding.

Just because it’s “herbal” doesn’t mean it’s safe. Henna-based and PPD-loaded shampoos can mimic black hair dye but leave behind residue that stays locked in the hair shaft. Long-term use = long-term problems.

Choose professional color products. Be honest with your stylist. Trust the process.
