11.Puwede ring malaki ang thyroid o may goiter. Hindi lahat ng sintomas ay natatagpuan sa isang taong may hyperthyroidism.

Sa mga matatanda, ang mga sintomas ay hindi gaanong nararamdaman kung minsan liban sa pagpayat o madaling mainitan at mapagod.
May isang klase ng hyperthyroidism kung saan lumuluwa ang mga mata at ang tawag dito ay Graves’ disease. Ito ang malimit na tinatawag ng mga matatanda na goiter SA LOOB. Kasi hindi masyadong malaki ang leeg o walang goiter pero nakaluwa naman ang mata. Pag tingnan ang mga taong mayroon nito, para silang gulat o kaya naman galit dahil sa hitsura ng kanilang mga mata.

Ang taong may hypothyroidism ay may thyroid gland na hindi gumagawa ng sapat na T3 at T4 hormones na kailangan ng katawan. Nasa dalawang porsyento ng populasyon ng buong mundo ang may ganitong kondisyon. Mas malaki ang tsansa ng mga babaeng magkaroon nito kaysa sa mga lalaki. Ang mga babaeng may edad 60 pataas ay may mataas na risk. Ang karaniwang sakit na nagdudulot ng hypothyroidism ay ang Hashimoto’s disease, isang kondisyon kung saan ang immune system ay gumagawa ng antibodies na sumisira sa thyroid cells at nagreresulta sa pagtigil ng produksyon ng thyroid hormones. Maaaring ding magdulot ng hypothyroidism ang hindi pagkain ng mga pagkaing mayaman sa iodine at pagsailalim sa thyroid surgery kung saan inaalis ang thyroid.
