Iloilo City opens first ‘Library sa Merkado’ at Central Market

The Iloilo City Government has opened its first public library inside a public market, expanding access to books and learning spaces for children, families, vendors and shoppers.

“Para gid ini sa aton mga kabataan. We have to start them young to love reading. Kay kon sila bata pa naga-enjoy sa pagbasa, indi sila mabudlayan magtuon sa pila ka adlaw,” Mayor Raisa Treñas said.

This August 28, the Iloilo City Government opened the first "Library sa Merkado" initiative at Iloilo Central Market, giving market-goers a space and books to read.

It is located at the second floor, Dry Goods section, and is open from Mondays to Fridays, 8 am-5 pm with plans to extend opening hours.

Mayor Raisa Treñas led the opening ceremony and highlighted the importance of reading to strengthen literacy and reading comprehension.

The project is a joint initiative of the Iloilo City Public Library, Technical Institute of Iloilo City, and Zonta Club of Iloilo Inc., providing market-goers and nearby communities with an accessible space to read, learn, and study.
