MMFF REVIEW: ‘Firefly’

The movie’s simplicity was its beauty. It reminded me so much of the stories and episodes of ‘Hiraya Manawari’.

Child actor Euwenn Mikaell is very promising. So much potential and charm on-screen. I was rooting for him. Kind of reminded me of Dorothy and her dog Toto in ‘Wizard of Oz’. In the movie, the child named Tonton meets different characters Mang Louie, Billy and Erika as he goes on his quest to bring her mom back to the island of Ticao.

I find Ysabel Ortega’s acting as very natural. She wasn’t cringey, for me.
I also find Max Collins’ acting as a reporter very sharp and effective. Very me, chos!
The thing with Dingdong though is, napanood ko na kasi siya sa ‘Rewind’, so nahirapan ako i-dissociate siya from John to Tonton.

Nabitin lang ako kay Alessandra de Rossi. I mean, we all know how good Alessandra is as an actress kaya I wanted to see more of her.

My takeaway from the movie was that ‘our core memory of childhood is our refuge and safe space as we navigate our life in this world.’ A very powerful message wrapped and presented thru a simple, colorful narrative thru a child’s eyes.

And yes, back when I was a child, my mom would allow us to spend summer vacation in our Nana Azon’s house in Bugallon, Pangasinan where we would chase and watch fireflies light up the front lawn of their kubo. Watching fireflies is definitely life spectacle you shouldn’t miss.
