Vitiligo is a long-term skin condition characterized by the loss of pigment, resulting in patches of skin turning a milky-white color. It occurs when melanocytes—the cells responsible for producing skin pigment (melanin)—are destroyed or stop functioning.
Here is a quick overview of what you need to know:
The Cause: While the exact cause isn't fully understood, it is widely considered an autoimmune condition, where the body's immune system mistakenly attacks its own pigment cells. Genetics and environmental triggers (like severe sunburn or chemical exposure) can also play a role.
Symptoms: The primary symptom is the appearance of flat, white spots or patches on the skin. It frequently starts on sun-exposed areas like the hands, feet, arms, and face, but can develop anywhere, including the inside of the mouth and hair (which may turn white prematurely).
Is it contagious? No. Vitiligo is completely non-contagious and is not life-threatening.
