This was my first time working with Maleeha and she was an absolute delight! I loved working on her big gorgeous eyes. I worked with a range of blue to create an experimental look - to also assert that clean beauty can be equally spunky! The rest of the face just followed with pink lips and coral pink on the cheeks. For this look, the eyes certainly took centre stage, setting everything to fire, so I decided to tone down the lips with just a tint, to further add to the boldness character who carries a tint of sin. Makes it feel like she is was born with such vibrant lips - like she owns them through and through.

Amal and I built this character sketch together for Cruella DeVil, for which Amal had a variety of accessories that we chose to build from. This, for me, is an experimental vision for the character who’s sassy, uppity stylish and leads the way, always.

The eyes are the grandest feature for this character - crystalline, almost candy-esque. I started by doing a line of red glitter, which quickly took a turn when we saw how beautiful it looked on the eye. The glitter is a mixture of a few different tones of red to achieve that depth. We decided to go all the way with an almost stamped lid that becomes a feature on it’s own. The elongated liner adds to the femme fatale promise of the character we created. The green lenses add to the contrast, especially since the red pigment has been carried down to the lower lash-line.

The idea for the look came directly from this shirt designed by Néo by ZAHRA
I was able to pick the magenta lines from this kurta and turn it into an accent on an otherwise soft clean face. A line here, a dot there - literally. It helped me put emphasis on Zahra’s beautiful mischievous eyes without a large statement. The face. I chose to handpick and craft the eyes with individual lashes, with n**e lids and brushed brows. On the face, I used a combination of liquid highlighter and face pigment to achieve that gorgeous glowing skin. I carried that magenta pink from the eyes to the lips and cheeks as well to tie the whole face together.

Glistening, Glimmering Egyptian Summer


The skin came way before the eyes. Her skin is so beautifully taken care of - and one of the few preferred faces to play with - I built it up purely with skin pigments and highlighter. The minute a face is defined by highlight, there are very few times that I prefer to go in with a shade for contour. With the highlights of the face defined, the contour is already in place. I added clear gloss to a number of high points here to accentuate that milky skin texture, so that it almost becomes a silken canvas for the embroidery of the eye to be accentuated.

Building on from the idea of a gold eye, I started playing with pigments which built up to a more tangible material like the flat gold sequin. There were several ways this look could’ve gone (all very yummy ideas forever developing in my mind), but I decided to focus on the idea of adornment. Almost ancient Egyptian in its delivery, the eye becomes the crown for the rest of the face, pulling all attention towards itself. The eyes are further defined by a darkened upper and lower waterline to bring out the beautiful mahogany brown of that iris - again, reminiscent of almost a Nefertiti era. The lid is accentuated with shimmery bronze pigments - some eye shadows mixed with gold highlighters - that have liberally been taken up to the brows to pull together that gold as almost underlying layer that can be seen but not clearly distinguished. I elongated the shape of the eye by applying individual false lashes carefully, and combing mascara in to become almost an extension of the dark waterline.

The look here is soft, sultry, reflecting the glory of the summer sun and how it melts everything in sight. The glossy lips are such a huge part of this look. They had to be soft, yes, but what colour? A n**e glossy lip would have been at crossroads between trying to hard to be formal with that rich eye. A burgundy red velvet was fitting with the royalty of the eye as an automatic directive. To be able to continue the softness of the skin, a moisture-rich bold colour, like this deep red, ties this entire look together. To complement the lip, I added colour to the cheek that matched the family of the lip colour. Red blush is such a gorgeous colour for desi skin! That final touch helps complete the grandeur of the entire look.
