At the heart of this remarkable detail sits Barbara of Brandenburg, Marchioness of Mantua, wrapped in luminous gold. Behind her stands her son Rodolfo, while at her feet the young Paola appears to offer an apple with the natural spontaneity of childhood. Nothing extraordinary seems to happen, and yet everything does. What captivates me is how Mantegna transforms a court portrait into something profoundly human. Rank and ceremony never disappear, but they gently yield to gestures that every generation can understand. A mother’s composed presence, a son’s attentive stance, a child’s innocent offering. These are not simply historical figures. They become reflections of the bonds that quietly shape every family, regardless of time or status. For me, this fresco reveals one of the greatest powers of Renaissance art. It does not preserve people as distant monuments. It restores their humanity. More than five centuries later, titles have faded, political ambitions belong to history, yet a simple exchange of glances and gestures continues to speak with remarkable clarity. "Keeping quiet is as political as speaking out" - Arundhati Roy From the conversation at @wlfwayanad 2022 titled Things That Can & Cannot Be Said with Dr Vinod K Jose. Arundhati Roy is best known as the author of “The God of Small Things,” which won the Booker Prize in 1997 and has been translated into more than forty languages. Her work “The Ministry of Utmost Happiness,” was long-listed for the Man Booker Prize 2017. Arundhati Roy has also published several works of non-fiction, including “The Algebra of Infinite Justice,” “Listening to Grasshoppers,” “Broken Republic”, “Azadi: Freedom, Fascism, Fiction” and most recently her memoir “Mother Mary Comes to Me”. Dr. Vinod K Jose is an award-winning journalist whose career spans key leadership roles in journalism. He grew up in Wayanad and has worked as a journalist in both New Delhi and New York over a 25-year career. He served as the editor of The Caravan from 2009 to 2023 and previously worked as a radio news producer with U.S. public radio (2002–2007).
