Arkhangelsk Seaweed Factory survived and thrived thanks to the "harmful waste" - precious biologically active substances left after alginates production which found great use at the factory. Mrs. Nekrasova together with employees of Arkhangelsk Seaweed Factory received 17 inventor's certificates and over 20 patents with the leading scientific and medical enterprises of Saint Petersburg, dentists, cardiologists, oncologists, and pulmonologists for finding the use for those substances.

During the last 10 years, the factory has upgraded its production facilities to produce pharmaceutical substances, food supplements, fertilizers, components for cosmetics and perfumes.

Brittany France Eyewear manufacturer Naoned, which is the name for the city of Nantes in its regional language, has launched a collection of four eco-friendly sunglasses, manufactured from brown seaweed.

The first of its kind, the collection was developed in collaboration with Algopak, a French company which specializes in the “blue chemistry” of converting renewable algae into biodegradable plastics made from brown seaweed harvested around Brittany.

Naoned, founded in 2012 by Jean-Philippe Douis, christened the four sunglass models Molenez, Enez Sun, Litiri and Banneg after four islands off the coast of Brittany. The collection is named Dôn, after the Celtic sea goddess, and characterized by rounded shapes and golden metals.

After the launch of alginates and mannitol production facilities, the factory started facing discontent from green-minded city dwellers due to plentiful production leftovers. Ecologists pejoratively called the waste substances "harmful tar" and "dirty mother liquor".

In the 80s, that-time factory director Mr. Kudryvtzev invited a scientist from Leningrad Forestry University named after Kirov Mrs. Nekrasova to help with waste recycling. According to Mrs. Nekrasova, the most challenging task was to convince the factory workers that in fact the "harmful waste" were unique biologically active substances that could be used in medicine, cosmetics and for various technical purposes.

With the scientific help received, factory employees improved some production processes, such as extraction of cupric chlorophyll from laminaria.

Filmmakers from eight countries of the Arctic zone (Russia, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Canada, USA, Iceland and Finland) were invited to participate in the "Arctic Open" film festival. "Arctic Open" provides two competition programs - national and international ones.
The festival will be held on December 7-9th, 2017 in Arkhangelsk and Severodvinsk.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a long-term degenerative disorder of the central nervous system that mainly affects the motor system. Various sources estimate that 4-10 million people in the world are affected by Parkinson's disease. Around 300,000 of them live in Russia.

Mannitol is a type of sugar alcohol which is also used as a medication. As a sugar, it is often used as a sweetener in diabetic food, as it is poorly absorbed from the intestines. As a medication, it is used to decrease high pressures in the eyes, seen in glaucoma, and to lower increased intracranial pressure.

Arkhangelsk Seaweed factory is the only enterprise in Russia that produces mannitol from the brown algae laminaria.

🔈 We hand-harvest seaweeds at the depth of 5-6 meters in one of the cleanest water areas in the White Sea. Freshly harvested seaweed thallus of laminaria contains more iodine than thallus washed ashore with the tide.
🔉 We only harvest 2-3 years old wild seaweed. That is when it contains the maximum amount of alginic acid and mannitol – the substances used for the production of unique pharmaceutical products.
🔈 We are the only enterprise in Russia that has a license for production of strategically important pharmaceutical substance mannitol, which is extracted from brown algae.
