What is Money?

How Did Money Begin?

Long ago, people did not use money. They exchanged goods directly. For example, a farmer gave wheat to a shepherd in exchange for milk or sheep. This system was difficult because both people had to want each other's goods at the same time.

To solve this problem, people started using valuable items such as salt, shells, cattle, and metals as money. Later, gold and silver coins became popular because they were durable, easy to carry, and valuable.

As trade increased, governments introduced paper money. Today, we also use digital money through banks, debit cards, mobile apps, and online payments.

How Does Money Work?

Money works because people trust it. Everyone accepts money because they know they can use it to buy goods and services from others. This trust keeps the economy moving.

For example, a worker receives a salary, buys food from a shop, the shopkeeper pays the supplier, the supplier pays the factory, and the factory pays its workers. In this way, the same money keeps moving from one person to another.

Main Functions of Money

1. Medium of Exchange – It is used to buy and sell goods and services.
2. Store of Value – People can save money for future use.
3. Unit of Account – Money helps measure the prices of goods and services.
4. Standard of Deferred Payment – Money can be used to repay loans in the future.

The Origin of Economics

Economics is one of the most important subjects in our daily life. It helps us understand how people make decisions when resources are limited but human wants are unlimited.

The word Economics comes from the Greek word "Oikonomia," which means "Household Management." In the past, this word was used to describe the proper management of a family's resources. Over time, its meaning expanded and became the study of how individuals, businesses, and governments manage resources.

Many great economists contributed to the development of economics, but Adam Smith is known as the Father of Modern Economics. In 1776, he published his famous book, The Wealth of Nations. This book changed the way people understood trade, markets, production, and wealth.

Adam Smith believed that free markets, competition, and individual effort help improve the economy and increase prosperity. His ideas became the foundation of Classical Economics and continue to influence economic thinking today.
