What do golf, tennis and hockey have in common?

They are all highly asymmetric sports.

Again and again, the body rotates, loads, swings or pushes more strongly in one direction than the other.

And your body adapts.

That isn't necessarily a problem. In fact, adaptation is part of what allows an athlete to become faster, stronger and more efficient at a specific movement.

But thousands of repetitions can also create noticeable differences between the two sides of the body.

One side may become stronger.
One direction may become easier.
Certain muscles may work differently.
And the body may develop its own compensation patterns.

Research has observed side-to-side differences in rotational power in golfers, tennis players and ice-hockey players—exactly the kinds of sports where powerful movements are repeated in a preferred direction.

The important question isn't simply whether your body is asymmetric.

The question is how well your body manages that asymmetry.

In this episode of AtlasPROfilax Explained — When Your Body Compensates, we explore what repeated asymmetric movement can mean for posture, muscular balance and the way the body adapts.

AtlasPROfilax focuses on the upper cervical region and the muscles surrounding the Atlas, with the aim of releasing muscular tension and supporting more natural postural balance and neuromuscular function.

Whether you're swinging a golf club, hitting a forehand or taking a slap shot, your body is remarkably good at adapting to what you repeatedly ask it to do.

The question is:

What has your sport taught your body to do?
