HARARE — The late millionaire businessman Wicknell Chivayo and his wife Lucy will be buried without their heads following last Wednesday’s fatal helicopter crash, a family spokesman confirmed on Sunday.

The couple died alongside three other individuals—two pilots and a security officer—when their aircraft went down in misty conditions at Kudenga Farm in Marondera.

According to Herbert Chivayo, the deceased’s uncle and family spokesman, the bodies were heavily exposed to jet fuel and incinerated in the resulting blaze, leaving the remains incomplete and unidentifiable.

“The bodies were burnt until the fire died on its own, so you can imagine what the status is like,” Herbert said. “They were beyond recognition.”

Addressing speculation that had circulated online, the spokesman explicitly dismissed rumors that the victims' heads had been retrieved from the wreckage. He explained that while forensic officials initially suspected certain recovered fragments were head remains, subsequent scientific examinations ruled that out.

“I have seen on social media people saying that the heads were found, but that’s not true. No head was found,” he stated. “That’s the situation.”

The family has scheduled a joint burial for the couple on Thursday. They will be interred side by side at Glen Forest Cemetery in Harare.

The fatal flight was en route from Chivayo’s rural home in Chivhu and had a planned stop in Marondera before the crash occurred. According to reports of the incident, the pilot’s final transmitted message indicated that the crew was struggling to navigate out of heavy cloud cover.

Prior to his death, Chivayo was a prominent and controversial figure in Zimbabwe, having faced corruption allegations relating to opaque government contracts awarded to his businesses. -
