The condition is caused by bacteria that digest keratin—the protein that gives skin its strength. As the bacteria break down the skin, they create multiple small, shallow pits or craters, typically measuring 1–3 mm in diameter. These pits may merge together, forming larger irregular areas.

Medical Summary Case 1
Nail plate removal was performed following traumatic injury with development of a subungual hematoma and nail detachment. The procedure was indicated to prevent inflammatory complications and support proper healing.
The nail should be monitored during regrowth to ensure healthy nail formation. Follow-up examination is recommended in 2–3 months.

Medical Case Summary Case 2
The patient presented with pain and signs of active inflammation of the nail unit. Pre-existing nail dystrophy had been assessed one year earlier, and corrective treatment with follow-up was strongly recommended; however, the treatment plan was not continued.
Delay in management resulted in recurrence and progression of the condition, requiring treatment to be restarted. Additional irritation was caused by embedded hair within the wound area.
Nail resection was performed to relieve pain and control the inflammatory process. Strict adherence to follow-up and treatment recommendations is essential to achieve lasting results and prevent recurrence.
Follow-up visit recommended in 1 month.

Prosthetic nails are not a procedure I generally recommend. However, in selected cases—when severe postoperative consequences result in complete nail dystrophy and restoration of the natural nail is no longer possible—they may be considered as a temporary orthopedic solution.

This procedure is performed only after thorough clinical assessment and strictly based on medical indications. The goal is not aesthetics, but supporting comfort, function, and quality of life during the rehabilitation period.
