Someone shook the trust I have always had in Singapore last night.

At around 10:30 PM, I was finally preparing to close the booth and head home. All the surrounding booths had already closed at 9:00 PM, the crowd had subsided, and I was there alone.

Before packing up, I stepped away for a quick toilet break (right beside MOS Burger).

As I walked away, I remember thinking:

“My booth should be safe, right? There aren’t many people around, MOS Burger is still open, and there is a CCTV camera directly facing my booth. It is only a minute away. This is Singapore, and this is inside a shopping mall.”

But when I returned and began packing, I suddenly noticed that our display tester of **RevitaRosée Hydrating Face Cleanser** was missing.

I did not panic. I searched around the booth, hoping that it might somehow have fallen or been misplaced. That seemed very unlikely—but I still did not want to believe that someone had taken it.

On the bus home, I reminded myself to calm down. I informed the booth organiser that I would check everything once more the following morning. If the tester still could not be found, I would approach the mall management and, if necessary, make a police report so that the CCTV footage could be reviewed.

I understand that leaving the booth unattended, even briefly, was partly my responsibility. This is a lesson I will remember.

However, I am not prepared to simply ignore an act that damages the sense of trust and security we value in Singapore—especially when there is a CCTV camera directly above the area.

The monetary value of the tester is not the most important issue. What hurts more is the thought that someone may have knowingly taken something that did not belong to them.

Singapore is safe because most of us respect one another and do the right thing, even when nobody appears to be watching. That trust should never be taken for granted.

I will check again and follow up through the appropriate channels. For now, let this be a reminder to myself and to every small business owner:

Stay vigilant—even in the places where you feel safest.

On 14 August, I chanced upon a newly posted video by BestFoody featuring Basq & Bean on Facebook.

I was taking a short break while working alone in the office late at night. As I watched it, my heart trembled and my eyes became wet.

I understand how difficult it is for a small business to survive in Singapore—and how much harder it is as a “one-man team.” It does not necessarily mean there is only one person, but at every critical decision and crossroads, it often feels as though there is only you.

You are not alone, yet you are alone. Only those who have experienced entrepreneurship will truly understand this irony.

After visiting my dad with my wife and brother that Sunday, I suggested an early “coffee break” before lunch. Everyone was puzzled until I explained, “I want to support someone. Let’s give it a try—even if it is just once.”

My wife is a coffee lover, while my brother loves cheesecake. I am neither—but supporting this business was why I suggested going.

I have never been fond of sweet food, especially on an empty stomach. It often makes my stomach uneasy and leaves an uncomfortable coating on my teeth. Basq N Bean was a rare exception.

We shared two slices of cheesecake and each had a coffee. The cheesecake was soft, creamy and moist, and I could taste the quality of the ingredients. Despite not having eaten lunch, both my stomach and teeth still felt comfortable afterwards.

The challenge for businesses that insist on quality is finding enough discerning customers—and surviving long enough for them to discover you and return.

Thank you, Basq N Bean, for continuing to make something with care. We even took away another two cheesecakes for our children.

I am not usually a father who buys cakes for his children—but yours, I bought.
