Do you know the difference between Physical & Chemical Sunscreen?

Physical Sunscreen is commonly known as mineral sunscreen which works by creating a physical barrier on the skin that shields it from the sun’s rays

Chemical sunscreen will absorb into your skin and sit in the deeper layers. They will absorb UV rays and change them into heat then releasing it from the skin

There are a total of 5 different skin types which are normal, dry, sensitive, oily & combination. I will share with you what are some characteristics of the different skin types so that you are able to look out for them.

Normal Skin: It is balanced and does not feel too dry or oily.

⭐ Have a radiant complexion
⭐ Has small & visible pores
⭐ Does not prone to breakouts & flakiness

Dry Skin: It produces the least sebum among all the skin types

⭐ More visible finelines
⭐ Feels tight or less elastic
⭐ May feel itchy & irritated

Sensitive Skin

Do you know what is the difference between Sun Protection Factor & Protection Grade of UVA?

Sun Protection Factor (SPF)
➼ The amount of time a product can protect you from the sun’s UVB rays

SPF number:
➼ indicates how much longer it takes untanned skin to start to redden with sunscreen applied compared to how long it takes to start reddening without it

Calculation:
Minutes to burn without sunscreen x SPF = Sun exposure time in minutes

For example

SPF 30: 15 minutes x SPF 30 = 450 minutes

Protection Grade of UVA (PA)
➼ how effective sunscreen or sunblock is at protecting skin from UVA rays

Common PA Rating:
PA+ = Some UVA protection (2 to 4 times)
PA++ = Moderate UVA protection (4 to 8 times)
PA+++ = High UVA protection ( 8 to 16 times)

* Each ‘+’ indicates how much protection you are getting

Choosing a suitable SPF value or PA
Daily: SPF15/PA+
Outdoors: SPF30 or higher/ PA++ or PA+++
Sports/Water Activities: Choose sweat or water-resistant. SPF30 and above/PA++ or PA+++

Do take note that higher SPF means a higher concentration of chemicals which will cause a burden on our skin. Hence, it is crucial to choose suitable sunscreen depending on the activities you do and the duration you will spend under the hot sun
