Time flies! 🚀 We at Baëlf Design had been on a sabbatical this past year, taking this time to learn new skills and grow. As we slowly get back into the creative groove, we would like to share some highlights in 2024. at the Asian Civilisations Museum was certainly one of them! 👏🏻

Many thanks to curators Weiqi , Jackie Yoong , Dominic Low and the student curators from LASALLE College of the Arts. A shoutout also to Kennie Ting , former ACM director and visionary who advocated for design and fashion to be acknowledged as important aspects of heritage and craft in Singapore. You have no idea how much your words of encouragement meant to us! 🫶🏻

The showcase ran a total of 3 cycles, and we are so grateful and honoured to have participated twice and showcased 2 unique pieces. What began during Covid as a museum initiative to support Singapore fashion designers became a yearly, magical display of experimental innovation and perseverance, shining light on the paths of uncertainty we faced, and our triumphs at the end of our journeys. 🌈

We are so proud to be part of this marvellous journey and aim to continue breaking boundaries for years to come! 🙌🏻⚡️

Unorthodox Interventions - 3D printing on Textiles

Dress “11:42” was inspired by the Astrolabe exhibited at the Asian Civilisations Museum in
Singapore.

The Astrolabe, one of the earliest analogue mathematical devices employed by Muslim travellers since the 8th century. As one of the most important scientific instruments for maritime trade, it kickstarted the heritage of trade and crossing of cultures. By measuring the positions of sun and stars, the 2D lines on an astrolabe can be used to tell many kinds of information, such as one’s latitude, estimations of time, predictions of future celestial events.
Furthermore, the astrolabe can be used to derive elevations of monuments and mountains, and identify the direction of the Qibla for Muslim prayer.

Baëlf Design was approached by .bae.bee who asked if we have any wearable art for a Little Mermaid themed photoshoot. Dress Tuberculum immediately came to mind.

In the original 1837 Danish version by Hans Christian Andersen, the Little Mermaid did not manage to win the prince’s heart. As a consequence, she dissolved into sea foam after her third day on land. 🫧

If there is any moral to this story, perhaps it will be that changing one’s identity does not guarantee reciprocated love. A thriving relationship is built on healthy boundaries and effective communication 🤍

Miss Universe Singapore Carissa Yap .rissa is wearing our 3D-printed Orchid piece at the 71st Miss Universe Pageant costume segment ♥️🇸🇬
We are very excited to support Carissa on her marvellous journey. It has been a humbling experience showcasing our work on an international platform with millions of viewers.

The much-beloved icon of Singapore, Vanda Miss Joaquim orchid flower, embodies Singapore’s strengths and character through our diversity. Seeing this inspiration in a new light, Baëlf Design imagines the islands of Singapore composed of the five-fold petals of an orchid draping the upper torso of Miss Singapore. By using computation to grow organic, vein-like structures, these petals form a high-rising collar as well as gracefully outstretched wings, all sensually enveloping the body in a lightweight, white-coloured 3D printed lattice. Ultimately, the 5 petals unite to compose the unmistakable silhouette of the islands of Singapore.

As seen in Pic 2, Baëlf Design explored different methods of patternmaking in the past few months, on the silhouette of Singapore to achieve a detailed, organic garden city aesthetic.

This project is in collaboration with Singapore Couturier Frederick Lee, who crafted the inner elegant sequin bodysuit and provided creative guidance.

The Golden Spiral was also used in the co-creation of Sheila’s pair of delicate, 3D printed ring-gloves. On top of core branching structure is a spiralling array of abstract, floral elements of varying sizes and orientations, some of which are embellished with crystals. When dipped in natural dye, these accessories took on a rich, layered hue.

Inspired by the elegant spirals formed from the Fibonacci sequence, naturally found on various plant species such as red cabbage, we made use of these spirals to co-create a 3D printed headdress design with LASALLE College of the Arts graduand .tjandra. She continued to dye the nylon hat using natural dyes sourced from food waste, and further embellished it with crystals ✨🫧
