Have you ever wondered when to use Cold or Warm therapy?

Although both cold and warm therapy can alleviate pain by improving blood circulation in local tissues, there are instances where one is preferred over the other.

Cold therapy (ice packs and ice baths) are usually used to lower pain from bruises and acute swelling.

Warm therapy (warm towel wrap or warm water baths) are used for chronic injuries. This includes residual pain, stiffness and tension.

Feet fact : Did you know that there is a relation between feet condition & lower back pain?

Both flat feet and high arch individuals experience misalignment within the ankle, affecting the positioning of the knee joint. This snowballs to affect the hip posture and eventually the lower spine alignment, causing pain.

A solution to this would be through custom inserts (insoles) which would help realign those joints.

Ever wondered what a Shin Splint is? Shin Splints are pain experienced along the inner edge of the shin bone or tibia (area highlighted in the photo).

This can be caused by vigorous physical activity or a sudden change in routine of those activities. Such examples include running, dancing and even military training.

Due to their lower arch, more stress in incurred on the lower muscles, meaning that there is a higher risk of experiencing shin splints amongst flat footers.

Getting enough rest after vigorous activities as well as icing fatigued and sore muscle areas are simple ways to reduce the risk of getting shin splints.

Feet Fact: Did you know, stress fractures are injuries that are caused by either flat feet or high arches in individuals?

It is a small crack or even severe bruising in the bone, caused by repetitively intensive activities (experienced commonly in runners and athletes).

Two simple ways to reduce the chance of getting stress fractures is firstly, by ensuring ample rest is taken after an intensive activity or sports session. (Especially for high impact sports like Basketball, Volleyball and Football).

Secondly, by ensuring that proper footwear is worn for each activity and by replacing out worn out footwear, chances of developing or worsening stress fractures can be reduced.

Feet Fact: Did you know that there's a correlation between flat feet and plantar fasciitis?

The plantar fascia is a fibrous tissue which runs along the bottom of the feet from the heel to the forefoot and plantar fasciitis (heel pain) is commonly caused by flat feet.

A good way to mitigate this is through insoles for flat feet or by incorporating simple stretching such at the plantar and dorsi flex into your warm ups before exercise or even daily activities( as shown in the photos).
