Why are your lips 👄 feeling dry even though they are covered by the face mask?

Breathing through our mouth when we are wearing a face mask can cause chapped lips, and other dry ailments. Face masks trap the warm moisture as we exhale creating the perfect environment for bacteria to grow, causing many types of skin problems from acne to sores.

The top protective layer of our lips is very thin, making them lovely and soft. They also do not have hair follicles or their associated oil glands, so less able to keep in water and more likely to be affected by changes in temperature, air humidity, the elements or irritants. Repetitive bad habits like lip licking due to dryness from mask wearing make matters worse.

While a lip balm should always have a place of purpose in our skincare routine, during this pandemic the need is more pointed.
