One source told Reuters that Air India "wants the funds immediately", though the infusion of capital will take place in tranches.

The source also said that Singapore Airlines, who owns a 25 per cent stake in the India carrier, would need to contribute its share of the proposed infusion for it to go through.

Discussions are ongoing and there has been no decision on the request, Reuters wrote.

Air India recorded nearly S$2 billion in losses for the 2025 to 2026 fiscal year.

Reports similarly surfaced in April this year about Air India requesting for capital from its majority shareholders.

Singapore Airlines own profits have been weighed down by Air India's dismal numbers, with Singapore's national carrier recording nearly S$1 billion in losses.
