Shinnier, longer and sunnier days are coming, inviting us to spend more time outdoors. While the sun affects our hormonal balance, provides us with vitamin D, triggers happy mood and fills us with optimism, we should be cautious and moderate.

We have to be especially careful if we are undergoing any target treatment which makes the skin more sensitive. Consult your oncologist, but note the following rule: avoid direct sunlight between 10 am and 4 pm.

9 May – European Melanoma Day

Every year, European Melanoma Day is celebrated on 9 May.
Its objective is to raise awareness on skin melanoma, which is a very agressive type of skin cancer. Its incidence has been on the rise continuously.

Skin melanoma is one of those cancers that is visible to the naked eye which makes early detection much easier than with other cancer types. In order to do that, regular examination of birthmarks is necessary. As many as 30 % of all new melanomas begin as benign birthmarks which then transform into the malign form. Since it is sometimes difficult for an individual to assess whether a birthmark is malign or not, it is always better for a dermatologist to do the regular exams using a dermatoscope.

During chemotherapy several problems can occur. Skin problems are among them, too. The most frequent reactions are acne like rash, irritation, itching, increased sensitivity to the sun ☀️.

Changes to the skin due to chemotherapy are not merely an aesthetic problem. Rash that very often resembles acne can become infected and start itching, particularly in the scalp.
When rash becomes infected, the doctor prescribes local medicaments containing antibiotics. Sometimes this is insufficient. In such cases, systemic antibiotics are prescribed.

Some tetracycline antibiotics make the skin sensitive to the sun and the following recommendations should be considered:
➤ Avoid sunbathing.
➤ Avoid staying in the open sun between 11:00 and 16:00.
➤ Use a hat, wear long-sleeve loose cotton clothes.
➤ All exposed parts of the body, particularly the face, cleavage and hands should be protected by the special protection cream from the pharmacy.
➤ Bathe in lukewarm water and gently pat your skin dry with a soft towel instead of rubbing it. Use little or no soap, deodorant, perfume.
