A business does not always begin with a building.

Sometimes it begins with an empty space and a decision to believe that something can be built there.

Concrete floor.
Unfinished walls.
No lights.
No finished systems.

Then the drawings arrived.

Then the shelves.

Then the people.

And slowly, the empty space became something else.

This would become a store.

The entrance was finally in place.

The store was ready.

Almost.

There was still merchandise to bring in.

Price labels.

Final preparations.

And an opening day waiting ahead.

But I did not know yet that I would not stay for it.

black limousine arrived at the parking area.

The security team came out first.

Then we walked upstairs into the almost finished store.

The owner looked at the shelves.

The lighting.

The space.

And then he saw the aquariums.

No water.

Wooden branches.

Green and red chameleons.

His reaction was short.

“Good heavens… even the aquariums.”

That moment stayed with me.

The store was almost finished.

Then we discovered one problem:

The entrance was too big to bring inside.

So we opened the roof of the shopping centre again.

A special crane arrived.

The enormous entrance structure slowly rose into the air while the entire floor seemed to stop and watch.

Sometimes building a store means doing things nobody planned at the beginning.

Then, in Banská Bystrica, someone took the papers from my hands.

The roof was finished.

The ladders came down.

The house looked lighter.

Then we had to drive the two French roofers home.

It was still dark when we left.

A few kilometres later, my old white car began to smoke.

We stopped.

We looked at the engine.

We looked at each other.

“Kurva.”

Probably the most accurate technical diagnosis available at the time. 😂

Before Piešťany, it happened again.

We eventually found a garage.

The problem was the head gasket.

And while I was worrying, two experienced roofers were sitting outside the closed garage drinking wine.

That morning, Jozef said:

“This was the best time of my life.”

Maybe he was talking about the roof.

Maybe Mello.

Maybe the Kopanice.

Maybe simply the three of us.
