As of May 8, 2025, Cardinal Robert Prevost of the United States has been elected as the new pope, taking the name Pope Leo XIV. This historic election marks the first time an American has ascended to the papacy. 

Pope Leo XIV was born in Chicago and ordained in 1982. He began his pastoral and academic service in Peru in 1985, where he served in roles such as chancellor, seminary rector, canon law professor, and judicial vicar. 

The conclave that elected him began on May 7 and concluded after approximately 25 hours. White smoke billowed from the Sistine Chapel chimney, signaling his election.  

Pope Leo XIV succeeds Pope Francis, who passed away on April 21, 2025, at the age of 88.
