About Us
puntland botanical company (PBC) is a sustainable social enterprise that connects
modern-day markets with gums and resins. PBC trains, partners, and sources out
products from indigenous and rural communities and markets them to contemporary
consumers through mainstream and alternative channels. In developing quality
products, PBC works with community unemployed youth to develop their gums and
resins harvesting capacities, making sure that in the process their age-old customs and
traditions are kept alive.
2. What we do
PBCas the marketing arm for plant gums and resins -mainly from the burseraceae
family- was informally launched in 2014 ( and became a registered legal entity with
the Puntland government in2016.), as an initiative to introduce NTFP harvesting skills,
expand the market for gums and resins in order to create a regular source of livelihood
for the rural unemployed communities and a venue for the conservation and
protection of trees from cutting for charcoal. PBC through sustainable product
mapping and harvesting, and market linking, finds new overseas markets for the
tree gums and resins, thus creating steady markets for the communities. PBC promotes identification of commercial species, training on tree tapping,
collection techniques for gums and resins, proper storage and transportation. It also
advocates fair trade and environment friendly procedures on raw materials gathering. Our Pricing system is likewise guided by the principles of protecting both the rights of
the harvesters and consumers while maintaining economic viability. Generated income is reverted back to plant new targeted species, and partner with
more communities through services such as education and practical trainingoutreach,
continuous marketing, spreading skills training to new villages, promotion and sales
activities online and in international trade fairs for gums and resins in foreign markets.

Boswellia frereana is a species of plant native to northern Somalia(puntland) where the locals call it "Maydi" or the king of all frankincense. It is also known as the Yigaar (or Yegaar) tree and by the common name for all frankincense, Luban.
Other than its aromatic uses, the locals also use it for medicinal purposes; they make it into a paste and apply it on the joints to treat inflammation and arthritis.
the highest Grade of the resin, known as Mushaad, and is traditionally used as natural high-end chewing gum, medicine and incense.
It has a warm Ambery fragrance with touches of honey, spice and musk.
Frankincense is an oleo-gum-resin, meaning it consists of essential oil, gum and resin. Most frankincense species contain 25%-30% oleoresin whereas Boswellia Fereana averages 95%-99% with virtually no gum component.
This makes it very easy to burn, and in oil or an electric burner it will melt almost completely, leaving a beautifully fragrant oil.
It also makes it easy to chew and as such is known in it's native region as Nature's Chewing Gum. It tastes lovely and can be chewed for hours.
It is believed that the body benefits from these therapeutic actions through chewing the raw resin. Maydi has been used in anti-ageing and rejuvenative cosmetic preparations and is believed to reduce wrinkles and add elasticity to mature skin.
