๐ŸŒฑ A SMALL FAMILY PROJECT. A BIG AGRICULTURAL MILESTONE. ๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿ‡ฟ

THE FIRST ORGANIC TURMERIC COMMERCIAL HARVEST AT MACWELE FARM HAS COMMENCED.

What began as a small family farming project at Macwele Farm in Sidvokodvo is now producing results that have exceeded our expectations.

Today, we are witnessing something truly special โ€” the commencement of our first commercial harvest of organically grown turmeric.

And honestlyโ€ฆ the results have surprised us. ๐ŸคŽ๐ŸŒฑ

From the soil have come beautifully developed turmeric rhizomes, with some plants producing impressive clusters of mature turmeric. What started as a small experiment has given us a glimpse of what is possible when a farmer believes in an idea, works the land, learns through the process and refuses to give up.

This harvest is more than turmeric.

It represents:

๐ŸŒฑ The power of starting small.
๐ŸŒพ The potential of agriculture in Eswatini.
๐ŸคŽ The value hidden beneath our soil.
๐Ÿ‘จ๐Ÿพโ€๐ŸŒพ The reward of patience, commitment and hard work.
๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿ‡ฟ A step towards building a stronger local organic agriculture industry.

For Macwele Farm, this is only the beginning.

We are harvesting, learning, documenting and preparing for the next stage โ€” transforming this remarkable crop from the farm into quality value-added products that can reach households, businesses and markets.

Sometimes, great things don't begin with a huge farm, massive machinery or millions in investment.

Sometimes, they begin with a small family project, a piece of land, a seed and the courage to try.

And today, that small beginning is speaking for itself. ๐ŸŒฑ๐ŸคŽ

Every great harvest begins long before anything is planted.

One of the first lessons we learned was this:

You don't prepare the crop first.
You prepare the soil.

When we returned home from our organic turmeric training in October 2025, we weren't thinking about building a business.

We weren't thinking about training farmers.

We weren't thinking about becoming part of a national conversation.

We simply wanted to grow healthy, organic turmeric for our own family.

So, we got to work.

Three months before planting, we began preparing the land.

Using a TLB, we excavated trenches 30 centimetres deep and 1 metre wide, leaving 1 metre between each trench.

It wasn't about making the field look impressive.

It was about creating the right foundation.

Because we knew that what happens beneath the soil determines everything that happens above it.

Into every trench, we carefully layered:

๐ŸŒฟ Fresh grass.
๐Ÿ„ Cattle manure.
๐Ÿ‚ Other organic materials.
๐Ÿ’ง Water.

Then, we covered everything with soil.

And that's where one of the most important parts of the journey began.

For the next three months...

Nature took over.

The organic matter slowly decomposed.

The compost matured.

The soil came alive.

Although nothing could be seen on the surface, something extraordinary was happening underneath.

Looking back today, it's incredible to think that this simple projectโ€”started to feed our own householdโ€”would one day attract the interest of farmers, researchers, institutions, and people who believed in the potential of organic turmeric.

At the time, we had no idea.

We were simply preparing the soil.

But every remarkable journey has a beginning.

This was ours.

Could turmeric be Eswatiniโ€™s next big export crop?

Eswatini is exploring opportunities in the rapidly growing E90 billion global turmeric market, with farmers being encouraged to venture into organic turmeric production as a new high-value crop. From strong export demand to opportunities for local farmers to replace E2.2 million worth of imports, stakeholders believe turmeric could open new income streams and diversify the countryโ€™s agricultural sector.

During a field day at Macwele Farm in Sidvokodvo, farmers, agripreneurs and industry leaders gathered to learn about the commercial potential of turmeric and what it takes to grow it successfully in Eswatini. Could this spice become one of Eswatiniโ€™s next agricultural success stories?
