Puja, also known as Dhamma Day, is one of Theravada Buddhism's most important festivals, celebrating as it does the Buddha's first sermon in which he set out to his five former associates the doctrine that had come to him following his enlightenment. This first pivotal sermon, often referred to as “setting into motion the wheel of dhamma,” is the teaching which is encapsulated for Buddhists in the four noble truths: there is suffering (dukkha); suffering is caused by craving (tanha); there is a state (nibbana) beyond suffering and craving; and finally, the way to nirvana is via the eightfold path. All the various schools and traditions of Buddhism revolve around the central doctrine of the four noble truths.

The protective effects of fruits and vegetables against chronic diseases have been attributed to the antioxidant properties of some secondary metabolites present in these foods. Plant polyphenols have been reported to exhibit bioactive properties, and in particular antioxidant activities. Longan seeds are found to contain high levels of some beneficial polyphenolic compounds such as corilagin, gallic acid and ellagic acid. The present study examined the free radical scavenging activity of longan seed extract by using three different assay methods. Longan extracts contained corilagin ranging from zero to 50.64 mg/g DW, gallic acid from 9.18 to 23.04 mg/g DW, and ellagic acid from 8.13 to 12.65 mg/g DW depending on the cultivars. Dried longan seed extracts of cultivar Edor contained high levels of gallic acid and ellagic acid and also exhibited the highest radical scavenging activities when comparing fresh seed and dried pulp extracts. For scavenging activity of DPPH and superoxide radicals, longan seed extract was found to be as effective as Japanese green tea extract while dried longan pulp and mulberry green tea extracts showed the least scavenging activities. In the ORAC assay, both fresh and dried longan seed also had higher activity than dried pulp and whole fruit. However, the results demonstrate that three polyphenolics may not be the major contributors of the high antioxidant activity of longan water extracts but this high activity may be due to other phenolic/flavonoid glycosides and ellagitannins present in longan fruit. In addition, longan seed also showed tyrosinase inhibitory activity with IC(50) values of 2.9-3.2 mg/ml. Therefore, the preliminary observations suggest that longan seed extract could be another potential source of potent natural dietary antioxidants and also in an application as a new natural skin-whitening agent.

Beauty tips you should adopt in your 30s+

1. Choose lighter lotions

It is a good idea to try lighter lotions or serums in your 30s as thicker anti-ageing creams are usually not necessary and may make the skin more prone to breakouts. Using a lightweight, non-comedogenic (non-pore-blocking).

2. Up the anti-oxidant ante

Go for topical antioxidants, vitamin C and E (use each morning). This will help protect your skin from free radicals and oxidative stress, one of the main contributors to premature skin ageing.

3. Start using oils

As we hit our thirties, skin loses its softness, hydration and springiness. All these symptoms can be helped by a good face oil, which when massaged in will also help with any puffiness (another common affliction over the age of 29).

4. Try a retinol

A topical vitamin A derivative (eg retinol or retinaldehyde, or intermittent prescription strength tretinoin). Vitamin A derivatives are the gold standard of topical anti-ageing care. They help optimise skin turnover and collagen production (from our 30s our skin cells get a bit ‘lazy’, i.e. the cell turnover slows down and collagen production declines, so it’s a good idea to start supporting these).

5. Avoid sugar

Balance your diet; consume more greens and less sugars and caffeine! Sugars increase the effects of ageing and can also worsen skin conditions like acne and rosacea. It activates inflammation and binds to the collagen – making the skin rough.

6. Start using a fruit

Skin does get duller in your 30s, so you should try to include enzymatic skin peels where possible into your routine which will slough away the often greying top layer of skin. Try pineapple enzyme, glycolic or mushroom peels as the cellular renewal process begins to slow down.

7. Make sun cream an essential

"It is a must to use broad spectrum sunscreen every day to protect your skin against harmful UVA and UVB rays. This should be done even if you are not outside much. Try our Om Skincare Invisible Finish Primer SPF40, this moisturises and protects your skin against.

8. Cleanse twice, daily

Cleansing effectively will reduce the dead skin cells on the surface and make the skin appear fresher and less dull. Also, a cleansed skin is the ideal base for anti-ageing treatments.

9. Drink your greens

As we enter our thirties, the body starts to reach its toxicity limit and can't process toxins like it used too. Toxins can build up from drinking too much caffeine or alcohol, not drinking enough water, grabbing fast food on the go, stress, lack of sleep, lack of exercise

10. Give up on faddy diets

Give up the faddy diets – they don't work. By now most of us know this. Don't jump on the band wagon of the newest diets. Instead try to focus on a long term nourishing way of eating. Too little fat will cause lack lustre hair and dry skin, too little carbs will cause fatigue and not enough protein can cause muscle loss. Instead try to cut down on ageing sugar, alcohol and smoking.

11. Actually take vitamins

A good one to remember is “AC"E your vitamins - that means vitamin A (sweet potatoes, organic butter, liver, leafy greens), C (peppers, berries, broccoli) and E (nuts and seeds). Eating foods high in these nutrients helps to support skin health.

12. Stretch your mind

Take time to do some quiet time for the body and mind including restorative yoga, meditation and peaceful mindfulness to reactivate the body, calm the mind and destress the nervous system.

13. Massage away tension

Massage is key every evening to remove physical stress from the muscle tissue and detox the skin cells as well as adding vitality and radiance to the muscles and skin.
