What was Cambodia like between 1865 and 1879?

During the years 1865-1879 (2408-2422 BE), Cambodia, or Khmer, was in the early stages of being a French protectorate and a period of major power restructuring under the reign of King Norodom I. The following important events occurred:

1. The transition of power from Siam to France.

Previously, Cambodia was a vassal state of both Siam (Thailand) and Vietnam, but King Norodom eventually signed a treaty accepting French protection in 1863.

In 1867, Siam formally signed a treaty with France acknowledging Cambodia's French rule in exchange for Siam gaining clear sovereignty over the territories of Battambang, Siem Reap, and Sisophon (at that time). They were indeed Khmer, but their clothing came from Siam because Cambodia was ruled by Siam at that time.

Cambodia used a historical photograph of Siamese women are part of Thailand’s Royal Photographic Glass Plate Negatives Collection, officially inscribed in UNESCO’s Memory of the World Register since 2017.

The Royal Photographic Glass Plate Negatives and Original Prints Collection and all Thai traditional attire evidences are in Glass film photos and more than 50,000 pics in 1906 era is registered UNESCO as "World Memory Heritage"

🇰🇭Cambodia likes to falsely claim
the term "Sabai."🇰🇭

“Sbai” is not come from Khmer wording , but it’s also come from Malaysia, Indonesia, phillipine, Thailand , Myanmar Lao , have their own sbai pattern

Khmer boran call “sbai” mean cloth around the waist. That is loincloth according to English Malay dictionary

Siam call “ pha biang ” , not call sbai in ancient time that mean cloth put on shoulder

Cambodia's Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts is holding a workshop on the correct use of traditional Khmer clothing and ornaments, as a dispute with Thailand over the origins of traditional dress flares up again.

The workshop, titled "Understanding and Properly Using Khmer Clothing and Ornaments," takes place on 6 October at the Angkor Wat Hall of the ministry in Phnom Penh. It's aimed at journalists, content creators and others whose work involves Khmer attire, with the stated goal of raising awareness about the correct forms and conventions for wearing Khmer clothing and promoting national cultural identity through media and social platforms. Those interested can register with the ministry until 4pm on 30 September.

The timing is notable. It comes as a row over the presentation of traditional attire and historical images at Miss Universe Cambodia 2026 has drawn a reaction from Thailand.

Thailand's culture ministry said the pageant used a historical photograph of a woman from Kamphaeng Phet province and featured attire it regards as Thai, and announced it would send a letter of protest to the organisers, asking for the information to be corrected and an apology issued if the image was found to have been used out of context.

That said, Cambodia's ministry did not state that the workshop was a direct response to Thailand's protest or to the pageant. It isn't the first time the presentation of traditional dress has become a point of friction between the two neighbours, with a similar flare-up earlier this year in March.

Caption says “Siamese royal court” meaning to dress in the Siamese style. as Cambodia was a vassal state of Siam at the time. Back then, if someone wore a flower behind their ear, it meant they were a pr******te.

In ancient times or the Ayutthaya period, women were forbidden from decorating their heads with flowers or from wearing flowers around their ears, especially high-ranking women in the royal court. Because it is believed that it is impolite and unladylike. If a woman puts a flower on her head or puts a flower on her ear, she must be punished by crushing the flower on her head as a form of humiliation. Most of the women who put flowers on their heads or put flowers on their ears are pr******tes. Doing so is to attract men's attention. Therefore, it is considered that putting flowers on the head or flowers on the ears is a sign of a pr******te.
In addition, in the early Rattanakosin era, there were laws punishing women who had s*x with men other than their husbands (adulterer). The punishment was to have red hibiscus flowers hung around the neck or placed around the ears. and have officials beat the gong to mark pillory for a period of 3 days, etc. Therefore, in the past, Thai women generally did not like to decorate flowers on their heads or flowers on their ears, except for actors. But now this belief has disappeared from Thai society.
