The updated AORN “Guideline for care and cleaning of surgical instruments” provides new and revised recommendations for evaluating and processing surgical instruments.

As Amber Wood, MSN, RN, CNOR, CIC, EBP-C, FAPIC, senior perioperative practice specialist and lead author, explained to Periop Briefing, the updated guideline will help teams optimize their processes for cleaning instruments, which plays a significant role in patient safety.

“An instrument that is not clean can never be sterile,” Wood emphasized. “Cleanliness is the foundation of safety.”

Kate อธิบายให้ ดร. A ฟังว่า ตอนที่เขาหันหลัง เสื้อกาวน์ได้ไปถูกผ้าคลุมบริเวณที่สูงกว่าระดับเตียงผ่าตัด ซึ่งถือว่าเป็นการปนเปื้อนอีกครั้ง ดร. A จึงพูดว่า
“ก็ยังถือว่าสะอาดพอแล้วล่ะ”

As Dr A, the surgeons, prepares to begin the procedure, he turns his back to the operative field to look at the supplies on the back table. As he does so, Kate, the perioperative RN, notices that Dr A’ s gown lightly brushes the top of the main drape on the patient, thereby contaminating the sterile field.

After witnessing the incident, Kate diplomatically states, “Dr A, you contaminated the field.” He immediately replies, “No, I did not.” Kate explains to Dr A that when he turned his back to the field, he brushed the main drape above the level of the OR bed. Dr A then replies, “Well, it’s sterile enough.” As a newly hired nurse, Kate is socially uncomfortable with the verbal exchange and perceives a power imbalance; however, she has the confidence to continue the exchange.
