One evening in an old teak house, Northern Thailand. Downstairs, sawmill dust still hangs in the air, aged wood and a green olive edge, the smell of a workshop at dusk. Every time a plank is cut, that dust usually gets burned. We asked the sawmills working with aged, reclaimed teak to save it for us instead. On the table, a jar of Ya D**g, the traditional roots-and-bark liquor rural households across Thailand still infuse at home the way their parents did: Thai black ginger, bitter resinous bark, earthy root. In the kitchen, last year's Ma Khaen pepper hangs dried, kept the only way hill families across Nan, Chiang Rai, Mae Hong Son and Chiang Mai know how, after a harvest that comes just once a year. Someone passes round a wad of fermented Miang tea to chew while the conversation runs on, a living practice across Northern Thai and Shan communities that is part ritual, part forest agriculture, and also the single most expensive material in our entire catalog. As the night winds down, cured Virginia to***co leaf, flue-cured and aged slow by Lanna growers, settles into the wood.

None of this is ours to begin with. We did not change how any of it is made. We found the people already doing it, sourced directly from farm and workshop, and extracted a way for perfumers who will never visit this house to hold it on a blotter. Materials like these had never been bottled as absolutes before, captured through upcycling and green chemistry, never mass production.

Every material is sourced directly from the farms, workshops and hillsides that grow it. Several of them had never been bottled as an absolute before we extracted them. The two get used interchangeably across the industry, and they're not the same claim. Miang. A fermented tea leaf chewed — not brewed — across northern Thailand for centuries. We ran it through CO2 extraction and got a world-first: Animalic and Burnt Leather in tension, a pairing you almost never see together, softened by Undergrowth depth.

There are almost 20 traditional herbal formulas in Southeast Asia built around this one bark. We call it Chalood.

It smells like a warm apothecary — toasted wood, almond powder, a mellow spiced musk. Nothing about it says "cinnamon," and yet that's the nickname it earned in local markets, centuries ago. 🌿
