Gastric bypass and other weight-loss surgeries — known collectively as bariatric surgery — involve making changes to your digestive system to help you lose weight. Bariatric surgery is done when diet and exercise haven't worked or when you have serious health problems because of your weight. Some procedures limit how much you can eat. Other procedures work by reducing the body's ability to absorb nutrients. Some procedures do both.

What is Bariatric Surgery?
Gastric bypass and other weight-loss surgeries — known collectively as bariatric surgery — involve making changes to your digestive system to help you lose weight. Bariatric surgery is done when diet and exercise haven't worked or when you have serious health problems because of your weight. Some procedures limit how much you can eat. Other procedures work by reducing the body's ability to absorb nutrients. Some procedures do both.

While bariatric surgery can offer many benefits, all forms of weight-loss surgery are major procedures that can pose serious risks and side effects. Also, you must make permanent healthy changes to your diet and get regular exercise to help ensure the long-term success of bariatric surgery.

What Is Iron Deficiency Hair Loss?
Whilst hair loss for many will be rooted in their genetic makeup, this isn’t always from female or male pattern baldness. There are many other factors, both hereditary and environmental, for losing your hair, with iron deficiency hair loss one that can fall into both. If you have been struggling to understand the cause of your thinning hair, having an iron deficiency could be a contributing factor. So, can iron deficiency cause hair loss and how do you find out if you have this condition?

Can Low Iron Cause Hair Loss?
Understanding iron deficiency and what this looks like if you have it is important before linking this to your own hair loss. With someone experiencing a lack of iron in their body, this will result in a reduced production of hemoglobin in the blood. The reason this has a direct effect on hair loss is that oxygen carried around the body by hemoglobin will not be able to reach the cells responsible for hair growth. Oxygen is needed to repair cells and stimulate hair growth, meaning less hemoglobin in the bloodstream links iron deficiency and hair loss together. Having an iron deficiency may leave you feeling tired, fatigued or with pale skin. Can low iron cause hair loss? Yes, but it doesn’t necessarily mean it is a permanent condition. When managed well, those experiencing low iron hair loss may be able to reverse the effects.

Is Iron Hair Loss Hereditary?
Iron deficiency is a type of anemia, where the body has a reduced level of hemoglobin, and is one of the most common with an estimated 3% of men and 8% of women having the condition in the UK alone. Many types of anemia can be linked to your genes, such as Thalassemia where the body does not produce enough hemoglobin to carry oxygen. In pregnant women, a low level of iron can be linked to blood loss through heavy periods, whilst in both men and women, bleeding inside the stomach and intestines can be a cause. Many of these issues are discoverable through blood tests and treatable with medication.

Most commonly, iron deficiency hair loss is linked to a lack of iron in the diet. This can be prevented with the right intake of iron-rich foods. With iron deficiency hair loss and early-stage male or female pattern baldness, for example, addressing your dietary intake is crucial. You may find that with increased iron within your diet, found in cereals, meat, pulses or green vegetables, the symptoms of an iron deficiency can be reversed.

Seek Advice for Iron Deficiency Hair Loss
As there can be many reasons for hair loss, ruling out any temporary or preventable factors first is always the first step. Here at Revive Clinic, we help those with permanent hair loss discover life-changing hair transplants that provide natural-looking results, however, if your hair loss is temporary or affecting you at a younger age, addressing these other factors first may help with natural hair regrowth. Iron deficiency hair loss can be a temporary condition, but if your hair loss is permanent, seek further medical advice or a consultation with a hair specialist.

Before Hair Transplant Operation
Read the following guidelines to better understand the patient protocol on the day of your hair transplant. Our team will provide you with more detailed and customized guidelines prior to your arrival.
Health Problems to Consider Before a Hair Transplant
Before the hair transplant procedure (and during the consultation stages of the arrangement), please let us know about any medical issues and medications you use.

If you have any health problems, please seek prior consultation from your doctor about your planned hair transplantation operation. We will also provide insight, but it should be considered in tandem with your primary physician or dermatologist’s input.
Avoid Blood-Thinning Medications
Avoid Alcohol, Smoking, and Caffeine
Avoid alcohol and caffeine the day before your procedure. Using both may affect the efficiency of local anesthetics that doctors give you before the operation.

Smoking decreases blood flow to the scalp by constricting blood vessels and limiting nutrient delivery to the follicles. For this reason, smoking should also be avoided the day before the procedure. You should further avoid smoking for the first week after your surgery, because this is when it is most imperative for your follicles to receive adequate nutrition.

To that note, it is also good to quit smoking permanently in order to improve the health and density of your hair.

Hair Transplant Procedure Day
Take a shower and take care of your personal hygiene the morning of the operation. Do not have any styling products in your hair. Come to the operation well rested, and having eaten a light breakfast. Avoid any caffeine.
We recommend that you wear a buttoned shirt or a wide-collar t-shirt, so that you don’t drag the shirt over your scalp. This is a good habit for the weeks following the procedure, too.

In general, wear comfortable clothing during the operation, because it takes nearly six hours, but depends entirely on the number of grafts you are receiving.

No companion is allowed in the operation room. We will host your companions in our waiting area or cafeteria lounge.
Do not chew gum, and avoid talking too much during the operation. Avoid using your personal cell phones or touch-screen devices during the operation.

You should avoid touching any of the grafts during and after the operation.

Hair Transplants: What to Expect

After the surgery, your scalp may be very tender. You may need to take pain medications for several days. Your surgeon will have you wear bandages over your scalp for at least a day or two. They may also prescribe an antibiotic or an anti-inflammatory drug for you to take for several days. Most people are able to return to work 2 to 5 days after the operation.

Within 2 to 3 weeks after surgery, the transplanted hair will fall out, but you should start to notice new growth within a few months. Most people will see 60% of new hair growth after 6 to 9 months. The surgeon might prescribe hair-growing drugs to improve hair growth after transplantation.
First Week
In your first week, you’ll be healing. You may see some redness and irritation in the area where the implant was performed, but this heals quickly in the vast majority of patients.
Most of our patients are back to their normal lives within a few days.
One to Three Weeks
The redness and irritation should subside within this time. The immediate healing process goes more slowly for some patients than others.
By about 10 days in, all your grafts should be firmly in place and it will be safe to resume your normal showering and shampooing habits.
One to Three Months
During this time, it’s totally normal not to see any change at all—or even worse, to notice hair falling out at a faster rate than before. You may feel like your hair looks even thinner than before you had the procedure.
This can be alarming, but it’s all part of the process. What’s happening is that your hair follicles, after briefly going dormant during the extraction and re-implantation procedure, are coming back to life.
As they do, they’re pushing out old, pre-existing hairs so they can start growing new ones. That’s why you’re noticing some hair loss.
Three to Six Month

This is where the initial growth period usually starts. The first new hairs coming in may be unusually thin and fine, or might have a lighter color or no color at all—and again, this is not a cause for worry. Subsequent hair growth will be thicker and more substantial.
It’s also not unusual for hair growth to be patchy and uneven at first. This is because the follicles may have been implanted during different periods in their growth cycle, so they’ll heal and regrow at different rates.
During this period, you might notice some red spots on your scalp that look like acne. These might be unpleasant, but they’re actually a good sign—it means new hairs are trying to come through. Some new hairs may get stuck beneath your skin like an ingrown hair, causing the red spots.

Six to Nine Months
This is usually when you should start to notice more substantial results, with your hair follicles mostly healed and the growth starting to become fuller, thicker, and closer to their normal color.

At our clinic, we usually see approximately 60% to 80% of new hair growth around the beginning of this period—starting at about the six-month mark. However, this can vary widely depending on the patient and the technique used to implant the grafts.

Nine to Twelve Months
On average, most patients see approximately 90% of their new regrowth during this period.

Twelve to 18 months
For some patients, new hair may still be coming in during this time. In addition, the texture and color of your hair may continue to change as your hair follicles find their new rhythm.

It’s extremely common for hair to fall out at first, grow in patchy, and take a year or even more to see your full results. The experience you have depends on your follicles, and no two patients are exactly the same.

In a FUE procedure, the follicular units are extracted individually and directly from the scalp, typically using an automated system. The extraction method involves a number of tiny, round incisions or punctures scattered throughout the donor area. In some cases, FUE can also be used to harvest body hair as a donor site.

The technique used to harvest donor hair is important because it can have a major impact on both your experience and the results of your hair transplant.

Here are some of the key advantages of choosing a FUE procedure:

Breast cancer is the second most common cause of female cancer death in the United States. Nearly 1 in 8 women will experience invasive breast cancer at some point in their life.

Researchers still don’t know why some people develop breast cancer and others don’t, but certain risk factors are known to increase your chances, such as certain gene mutations, delayed menopause, and use of hormonal birth control.

The United States Preventive Services Task Force recommends women ages 50 to 74 receive a mammogram once every 2 years to screen for breast cancer. Detecting breast cancer in the early stages — before it spreads to other parts of your body — gives you the best outlook.
