Procedure Duration and Preparation: Tummy Tuck Surgery will vary from approximately 2 to 4 hours in duration

There are different types of Tummy Tuck procedures and this may influence the time you are in Surgery.

Mini-Tummy Tuck

A mini-tummy tuck typically takes less time than a full tummy tuck and may be completed in a few hours, or longer if liposuction and abdominal repair are part of the Surgery procedure.

Full Tummy Tuck

A full tummy tuck Abdominoplasty surgery will typically take your Surgeon between 2 to 4 hours to perform. Be sure your Surgeon is going to repair any torn or damaged abdominal muscles during the Tummy Tuck for best results (some Surgeons offering discount surgeries do not include abdominal muscle repairs).

If you are having an additional makeover procedure done during the same surgical session, such as a breast uplift, a breast enlargement (augmentation) and/or liposuction to recontour your thighs, or having a hernia repair, the surgery time may be longer.

If you are combining other procedures at the same time, then expect your Surgery will take longer and also expect a bit slower recovery.

Surgical Markings for Your Tummy Tuck: Your Surgeon will Mark Your Stomach Area for your Abdominoplasty Incisions

Before your Tummy Tuck surgery, your Surgeon will perform Abdominoplasty surgery marking. Marking involves your Plastic Surgeon using a marking device, such as a pen or marker, to mark your tummy (abdomen) to indicate where the incisions for your Tummy Tuck will be made. This is why the pre-surgery planning sessions and your Surgeon’s skills are crucial to your getting the best possible Tummy Tuck outcomes.

Your surgical markings will also indicate where the center of your torso is located. It will also include the desired location of your navel as it will typically be re-positioned during the Tummy Tuck procedure. It is very important you discuss your preferences with your Surgeon in advance of the Surgery and also at the time of your markings.

If liposuction is being added to your procedure, as may be the case for your body contouring or Abdominoplasty surgery, then these areas may also be marked during your pre-surgery marking session with your selected Plastic Surgeon.

Surgical Markings: Standing up or Sitting down?

Surgeons are not identical in how they approach their crafts. Surgeons can differ on where and how they mark your abdomen before your surgery.

Many Specialists Surgeons find that marking your Tummy incisions, while you are actually STANDING up, is often the best way to approach your Tummy Tuck surgery. Others may choose to mark your abdomen once you are actually on the operating table.

The markings you receive will be unique to your specific procedure or combined procedures; as well as to the incision placement choices you and your Plastic Surgeon have discussed.

Abdominoplasty Incision Markings for Your Tummy Tuck

Here are primarily two primary approaches – and hence marking approaching — to your tummy tuck incisions. However, markings are dependent on what surgeries you are combining and specific incision preferences that you have discussed with your Surgeon; as well as what incision pattern is necessary to help you get you the flatter, tighter tummy you are seeking.

In a full Tummy Tuck, excess skin will be removed, and your skin will be pulled down and repositioned around the navel. Fat pockets around the navel may also be removed by liposuction or by manual extraction. A vertical reference line helps your Surgeon in making sure your abdomen will be symmetrical after your procedure.

Surgical marking variances are to be expected. Your markings and incision lines will often depend on your unique anatomy and your desired outcome and may differ from another patient’s Incision markings. We customise every surgery to meet the patient’s needs, and you will have a fully customised procedure with precise pre-surgery planning.

The markings also depend upon your Plastic Surgeon’s expertise in attaining the best tummy and naval placement results for your Tummy Tuck procedure outcome; if you’ve chosen one of our leading Plastic & Cosmetic Surgeons for your Tummy Tuck or other body contouring surgery, you can rest assured that you are in very experienced and precise Surgical hands.

Hospitalisation and Preparation for Your Tummy Tuck Surgery

Tummy Tucks are ideally performed in a fully Accredited Hospital where you can stay overnight, typically for up to two nights after your procedure. Our Surgeon Specialists understand that a Tummy Tuck isn’t a simple “back room” procedure, and we feel it is best practice that your Tummy Tuck Surgery is done in a certified hospital, by a Surgeon who is approved to operate in a hospital. Plastic Surgeons have higher standards of training in order to qualify for as a Plastic Surgeon Specialist, and it is not unusual that Cosmetic Surgeons often aren’t qualified to perform their Surgeries in hospitals. Hence we find they will often operate in their back rooms, stating “patient convenience.” However, this may at times compromise the level or timeliness of care you receive in the event of an unforeseen event. Additionally, our patients find staying over night in an accredited hospital with full-time Nursing Staff, for up to two or more nights after a Tummy Tuck procedure, is extremely helpful for managing the first few days after their operation.

So we feel strongly that Tummy Tuck procedures should not be done in someone’s “back office” — or worse yet, where a Surgeon’s is not qualified to Turkish standards or is a junior Surgeon — or a Surgeon who’s does not fluently speak the same language as you do when they describe how they will go about your procedure — as a Tummy Tuck is quite an involved procedure.

You don’t want unpleasant surprises, so choose the a surgeon with the most experience in Tummy Tucks – our leading Seven Plastic & Cosmetic Surgeons all have decades of experience and have performed thousands of Tummy Tuck procedures.

Why a hospital? Because a TUMMY TUCK (ABDOMINOPLASTY) is an involved procedure, most patients prefer having at least one night and even two or more nights in hospital for their immediate post-operative recovery period. Discuss your preferences with your Surgeon and be sure the post-Surgery Hospital stay is scheduled accordingly.

Pre-Surgery Medications

You will have been given instructions to fast before your surgery, and it is extremely important for your safety that you have done this. Do let your Surgeon and their team know the exact time of your last food or drink intake and what it was.

Are you nervous about your surgery? Being a bit nervous is entirely normal and Surgery should never be taken lightly.

You may be given an IV early in the surgery journey, and you may receive some medications via the IV (or orally beforehand) to help you relax or to feel sleepy.

Some medications are extremely helpful to reduce anxiety before your procedure.

Once you are placed on the Operating Table, your Surgical Team will make sure you are hooked up to monitors that will help track important body functions such as your heart rate, blood pressure, temperature, and oxygen levels of your blood (via an Oximeter). The Oximeter measures oxygen in the blood and typically clips over one of your fingertips. It shines a light through your fingertip – that’s why its so important to remove your nail polish prior to any surgery. An alternative is that the oximeter might be clipped onto your earlobe.

Depending on the length of your surgery and your particular needs, there is a chance that compression sleeves might be placed on your legs during the procedure; if so, these sleeves inflate and deflate periodically during the procedures. This helps improve blood circulation and helps to decrease your risk of developing deep venous thrombosis (DVT) or blood clots in the veins of the leg (e.g. sleeves may help prevent pulmonary thromboembolism). Heavier patients in particular are likely to benefit from having compression sleeves during longer Tummy Tuck Surgery or other lengthy surgical procedures.

Anaesthesia For Your Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty)

The type of anesthesia used depends on numerous factors. General anesthesia is used for most tummy tuck procedures and other related body or breast surgeries.

If you have opted for a sedative through your IV, it can be administered through your IV line. Additionally, the input system allows a specific and controlled amount of anesthetic to drip into the IV line and into your blood stream; this is felt very soon after your injection or the start of your drip.

People have described being aneasthestised in different ways. Some say it feels like a warm heat moving into the veins and creeping up into the arms or shoulders, and some report a metallic-taste. But it is a very quick process between the drip starting and you becoming peacefully anesthetized.

Because of the equipment needed to keep your breathing tubes open and regulated, you may find you wake up with an irritated and extremely dry-feeling throat.

That’s because you are breathing from purified tanks. There is no moisture in those tanks, or in the air you are breathing from those tanks (whereas in normal day to day breathing, there is typically at least some level of moisture or humidity in the air or through your nose, which helps you humidify the air that you breath).

Dehydration will be mediated, however, by saline which is added to your IV drip.

Sterilisation of the Surgery Area of Your Body Before your Procedure

Your Surgeon and Surgical Support Staff will “scrub in” before your Tummy Tuck procedure. They follow the best-practice methods and it can be a lengthy process; they will also wear the necessary protective gear in order to give you the best and safest care during your surgery procedure(s).

Before surgery but after the Anaesthestic kicks in, your Surgical Support Staff will also scrub your abdomen and torso and additional areas involved in your procedures, using a special antiseptic soap to sterilise the area. The washed area will then be rinsed, and finally is “painted” with a brownish-coloured antiseptic liquid that helps kills any additional surface bacteria or fungi.

The Tummy Tuck Procedure – The Details

Each procedure has unique components, and will depend on your desired outcomes, existing physique, and other factors including your Surgeon’s pre-surgical planning.

Most patients do not prefer to see the details of the surgery, but rather prefer a general overview of how their stomach will be made flatter, and how their abdominal muscles will be repaired and their stomach area contoured with additional liposuction to get the shape and contours they are seeking.
