“Historically, herbalists were farmers, mothers, monks, midwives, and physicians. They learned plants because they had to. Knowledge came from observation, experience, and long-term relationship with people and place. Modern labels came much later.

Today, there are different kinds of herbalists, and the difference matters.

Some people are home or community herbalists. They make teas, salves, syrups, and simple remedies for themselves and their families. This is a solid and honorable role when it stays within its lane. Problems start when household knowledge is presented as clinical care.

Some are folk or traditional herbalists, working from lived experience, local plants, and inherited knowledge. This can be incredibly wise and effective, but it depends heavily on humility, discernment, and knowing limits.

There are clinical herbalists, who work one-on-one, take full histories, look for root causes, track progress, and adjust over time. This requires serious study—anatomy, physiology, contraindications, herb–drug interactions, and knowing when to step back.

There are system-based herbalists, such as Ayurvedic or Traditional Chinese Medicine practitioners. These are complete medical systems with their own diagnostics and internal logic. Herbs aren’t chosen by symptom or trend, and training is extensive.

There are product-based herbalists, who grow, wildcraft, or make things to sell. Some are deeply knowledgeable. Some are not. Making a product does not automatically mean someone understands safety, complexity, or individual health conditions.

And then there are online or social-media herbalists. Some are educators sharing real study and experience. Others repeat blanket statements, stack herbs unnecessarily, or oversimplify serious issues. A following does not equal training.

The label isn’t the point. Scope and responsibility are.

A good herbalist—of any type—knows that herbs can help and harm, that “natural” doesn’t mean harmless, that one-size-fits-all advice is rarely wise, and that sometimes the right answer is “this is outside my scope.”

Having a page full of tinctures and teas doesn’t make someone an herbalist. It makes them someone who makes tinctures and teas— content creators.”
