The medulla is mostly found in thicker hair and it consists of a soft thin core of transparent cells and air spaces.

In my opinion, I ask myself if this has anything to do with the overall thickness of a strand of hair and it does. Thin strands/thin hair do not contain a medulla thus it is more prone to breaking and extra care is needed when detangling. A person with thicker strands may not have that to deal with.
