Medical Tests Men In Their 50s Should Take

You’ve reached the age where you’ve “learned a thing or two,” as one men’s ad intones, “the age of knowing what needs to be done.” Hopefully this includes checking in with your health care professional regularly to keep you healthy and happy. Whereas for your dad, 50 may have marked the start of a slow decline, there’s no reason you can’t remain healthy and robust for a good long time to come.
The older men get more nervous that they’ll see their physician and find out they’ve got some chronic condition that’ll require monitoring and medication -- and who wants that? Instead, think about preventive health care from a more positive, proactive angle: “Men are resistant to taking medication [say, for high blood pressure or cholesterol] because they fear side effects. I tell them to think about the much worse side effect of not finding out what’s going on, and taking care of it.”

Colonoscopy
At 50, you should schedule your first colonoscopy, although if you have a family history of the disease (a primary relative with colon cancer) or are African American, you should have begun screening in your 40s. The prep may be icky, but the process is painless and important. Not just for screening, but also for the immediate treatment of any polyps that might be found.
If your test is normal, you need only repeat every 10 years, but you still should have a f***l occult blood test as part of your routine checkup. So think of the benefit when your doc inserts a gloved finger in your re**um during your annual exam. This on-the-spot test for f***l occult blood is important, because blood in the stool can be an early indicator of colon cancer.

Heart health check
Although an EKG and a cardiac stress test are not routinely recommended unless you have risk factors such as a family history or are experiencing symptoms, “getting a baseline EKG is reasonable to suggest during this decade,” One thing that might be picked up on an EKG are tall waves, which can suggest thickened heart muscle, possibly caused by untreated high blood pressure.” This result requires follow-up with a cardiologist.
Ask your doctor if taking a daily low-dose aspirin is right for you -- it is right for most men this age, unless you have any type of bleeding disorder. A study in the heart journal "Circulation" agrees that the therapy is useful and cost-effective. It’s a case of no harm and potentially enormous good: “A low-dose aspirin a day has been shown to decrease the incidence of heart disease,”

Prostate Cancer Screening
If you’re not sure whether to get screened for prostate cancer, you’re not the only one -- there has been recent controversy. The American Cancer Society says that starting at age 50, you should discuss the pros and cons of this test -- I say do it at 30 if you’re African-American, or your father or brother developed prostate cancer before age 65 -- with your doctor. The reason to have the talk rather than definitely get the test? The standard screen, a blood test called for prostate-specific antigen, can be misinterpreted if not carefully read and lead to a possibly unnecessary biopsy.
“An elevated PSA could mean cancer, or not -- false positives are common,” Even if cancer is detected accurately, it might be indolent, or so slow-growing that it will never become an issue, whereas aggressive treatment can leave you incontinent and impotent.
For that reason, the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recommended against routine PSA tests for most men, a position that the American Urological Association vigorously disagrees with, saying that oftentimes, signs of prostate cancer are first detected by a physician during a routine check-up. Best thing you can do is speak with your doc about what’s right for you. If you experience any problems urinating, or see blood in your urine or semen, or have painful ej*******on, call your doctor right away.

Vaccine Update
Baby boomers, listen up: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recently issued a recommendation that everyone born between 1945 and 1965 get tested for hepatitis C. The CDC notes that 75 percent of adults carrying the virus were born during those years. The reasons why this rate is so high are not completely understood, but what is known for sure is that early detection and treatment will save lives. It was previously recommended that only those with certain risk factors, including IV drug use or getting tattooed in an unclean environment, get tested, but given that so many people are silent carriers, and considering that hepatitis C can lead to deadly diseases including cirrhosis of the liver and liver cancer, screening seems smart.

Medical Tests Women In Their 50s Should Take

Fifty may be the new 40 -- who would have thought half a century could look like Julianne Moore, Sharon Stone or Iman? -- and thanks to increased awareness about nutrition and exercise many women are taking care of themselves and remaining vibrant throughout this decade. But after menopause, women lose some of the protection that estrogen offered during childbearing years, increasing the risk for health problems such as osteoporosis and heart disease.
If you are among those who believe breast cancer is a woman’s greatest archenemy, it's time to revise your thinking. Go Red for Women, a heart-health initiative at the American Heart Association, notes that more women die of cardiovascular disease than from the next four causes of death combined, including cancer.
Annual physicals should be routine, and include blood pressure checks and cholesterol testing every three years. Keeping your weight under control is especially important: Declining estrogen levels also cause fat storage to shift from the hips to the waist, and increased abdominal fat raises your risk for diabetes and heart disease.
Health screenings plus knowing your family history will help you understand your individual risk.

Colonoscopy
Book your first colonoscopy soon after your 50th birthday. “No matter what your family history, age 50 is recommended for a first screening,” If no polyps are found, repeat testing every 10 years. “But if your doctor finds polyps classified as adenomas, which have cancerous potential, you need repeat colonoscopies every three years.”

Heart Health Check
A thorough exam early in this decade should include screening for your overall risk of heart disease. First up, a look at waist circumference. The bigger you become around the middle, the greater your risk of metabolic syndrome, including diabetes and heart disease. A circumference of more than 35 inches is cause for concern.
You might think about asking for a blood test called the C-Reactive Protein test, which the American Heart Association recommends to assess silent heart disease risk. An electrocardiogram, is smart for any woman over age 50, even in the absence of symptoms.
If you have a family history of heart disease, “or if you have symptoms like chest discomfort, shortness of breath, palpitations, or if you’ve been diagnosed in the past with a heart murmur,” you’ll want to schedule an echocardiogram, a noninvasive sonogram of the heart.

Bone Density Test
The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force has tweaked its recommendations for bone-density testing, saying that routine screening should start at age 65, while younger women should be screened only if they are at risk for fractures. Same advice comes from the National Osteoporosis Foundation guidelines. That said, “Most women today have been getting screened earlier.”
Think about getting your bone density checked if you are or were a smoker, if you were prescribed steroids such as asthma medications, are very thin -- there's an added risk for being thin and Asian -- have a strong family history of osteoporosis or have lost height in the last year.

We Are What We Eat:

Eating well is essential for healthy-looking, radiant skin. Here are some skin-friendly foods to include in your diet.

Proteins: these include organic or free-range poultry, meat or oily fish, yoghurt, cottage cheese, milk, nuts and seeds.

Essential Fatty Acids (EFAs): these are divided into omega-3, which includes oily fish, egg yolk, nuts, nut oils and flaxseed, and omega-6, which includes seed and seed oils, whole grains, some vegetables, evening primrose and borage oils.

Good grains: look for organic oats, wholegrain, rye or spelt bread, brown rice, wholemeal pasta, quinoa

Water: sip eight x eight ounce glasses of water every day to combat dehydration.

Vegetables: essential for vitamins and fibre, to help eliminate toxins from the body.

Chocolate: in small quantities this is good for the skin, as it's an excellent source of magnesium and antioxidants. Choose good quality dark chocolate with a minimum of 70 per cent cocoa solids.
