Hold on to your eardrums! The loudest volcanic eruption ever recorded goes to... drumroll Mount Krakatau in Southeast Asia! This fiery giant unleashed a ferocious blast in 1883, with the force of 200 megatons of energy – that's like 15,000 nuclear bombs going off at once – BOOM!

Volcano Alert Level! Volcanoes are like fire alarms, they can be classified based on their eruptive history:
Active: RUMBLE! This volcano is like a constantly ringing alarm. It erupts regularly, so keep an eye out for fiery shows!
Dormant: HUSH HUSH... This volcano is like a silenced alarm. It's had recent eruptions, but right now it's taking a break. Scientists are still watching though, just in case.
Extinct: SLEEPING BEAUTY... This volcano is like a deactivated alarm. It's been sooooo long since its last eruption, scientists think it's probably done for good.

Calling all volcano detectives! Let's crack the code on where the word "volcano" comes from. It all boils down to a fiery Roman dude named Vulcan! Who's Vulcan, you ask? He was the Roman god of FIRE! Volcanoes must have seemed like his super-hot workshop to people way back then.

Forget fiery mountains spewing molten rock! Mud volcanoes are a different beast altogether. These fascinating geological features are fueled by natural gas bubbling up from the Earth's depths. As this gas mingles with salty water and soft clay, it creates a soupy mixture – mud! Unlike their fiery cousins, mud volcanoes are much smaller and don't erupt with scorching lava. In fact, Trinidad, though not a volcanic island, has the perfect recipe for mud volcanoes to thrive.

According to NASA, “on May 29, 2006, hot mud and gas began gushing from a rice field near a gas exploration well in East Java.
Over the years, flows of boiling mud from Lusi have displaced more than 40,000 people, destroyed 15 villages, and caused nearly $3 billion in damage. It has become one of the most dramatic and damaging eruptions of its type. Some villages have been buried by layers of mud 40 meters (130 feet) thick. The mud, which has a consistency similar to porridge, pours constantly from Lusi’s main vent. Every thirty minutes or so, surges in the flow send plumes of water v***r, carbon dioxide, and methane shooting tens of meters into the air.”

According to the T&T Weather Centre, “Mud volcanoes are not true igneous volcanoes as they do not produce lava and are not necessarily driven by magmatic activity. The temperature of any given active mud volcano generally remains fairly steady and is much lower than the typical temperatures found in igneous volcanoes.
They may range in size from merely one or two metres high and one or two metres wide to 700 metres high and 10 kilometres wide. Smaller mud exudations are sometimes referred to as mud pots.”

According to the T&T Weather Centre, "On land in Trinidad, there are just under 60 known mud volcanoes that scatter the southern half of the island. Many of them currently show no activity, while others ooze liquid mud, muddy water, bubbles or natural gas. Occasionally, there are large eruptions that last a few minutes, with the most recent occurring at the Devil’s Woodyard in 2018 and in Tabaquite in 2019. Off Trinidad’s east coast, hundreds of mud volcanoes can be found on the seafloor, some as large as Naparima Hill in San Fernando".
