QUESTION - Is handmade soap better than store bought?

First of all, what you are buying at the store is probably not soap. Like how Kraft Singles isn’t cheese.

By the FDA's standards, Kraft isn't permitted to refer to Singles as "cheese" because this word indicates that a product is made with at least 51 percent real cheese. This is why the label reads "pasteurized prepared cheese product."

So just how Kraft singles is a pasteurized cheese product and not real cheese, Dove advertise their product as a beauty bar. And other brands advertise their product as anything but ‘Soap’ because they are not permitted to advertise it as soap. Real soap is the result of lye and oil. If it doesn’t say soap on the package, it is likely a detergent bar.

This means it has things in it to mimic “soapyness”, like lathering agents and surfactants (these simply reduce the surface tension of water). Add in some fragrance so the ‘soap’ can smell good. Now, some brands are also adding natural elements like oatmeal, coffee, charcoal etc to mimic a true, natural soap. But its not soap. It’s like a mild laundry detergent in bar form.

Body wash is the same idea just liquified and insanely priced.

So why should you care and why is handmade soap a good choice than a detergent bar for many?

Well when real soap is formed by combining lye and oil, one natural byproduct is glycerine, a natural moisturizing compound. It is a major ingredient in commercial lotions. But it is not found in commercially manufactured bars. They will be happy to sell it to you separately though!

Handmade soap is made with skin-loving oils, such as coconut oil, grapeseed oil, avocado oil and cosmetic butters, it is the combination of oils & butters is what makes each soap completely unique.

While we are asked to stay at home, deliveries will be put on hold. Stay safe everyone!
