Chelsea striker Fernando Torres has admitted that he is yet to live up to his £50million price tag.
The Blues paid the huge fee to Liverpoolin January 2011, making Torres the most expensive Premier League signing to date.
Drought
However, he did not endure the best of starts at Stamford Bridge, failing to score in his first 13 games for his new club, eventually breaking his duck against West Ham United, his only strike for Chelsea that season.
Another tough season followed but last season he started showing glimpses of the talent many were in awe of at Liverpool.
The Spaniard hit the back of the net 23 times in all competitions, yet only eight came in the league.
Despite rediscovering his form, his success at the London club is not what everyone expected compared with his time on Merseyside.
He has scored 37 goals in 139 appearances in his Chelsea career so far, but scored an impressive 81 goals in 142 appearances for Liverpool.
Even the striker himself admitted that this wasn’t good enough, telling Chelsea TV, as reported by Sky Sports: “The people are looking at me thinking I should do much better and it’s true.
“The reason you pay that money for someone is that he has shown in the past he is worth that.
“Now what you have to show is you can have the same value or even more value for things you have done at Chelsea.
“I know I have many things to do at this club to give the confidence back to the owner. The amount of goals I scored last season should be the minimum.
“I want to ask that of myself but I have enough time. I signed a five-and-a-half year contract and I’m sure the future can only be better.”
No regrets
However, the 29-year-old has no regrets about his move from Anfield, despite his difficulties in West London.
There were reports in the summer linking him back to Merseyside, according to the Metro, but Torres stated that he was happy staying put.
“I’m so happy to have made that hard decision in my career to come to Chelsea,” he added. “Over time you can see all the success that we’ve had as a team so everything was worth it.”
After injuring his knee against Steaua Bucharest in the Champions League last week, Torres will miss Spain’s final two World Cup qualifiers, but there is a chance he will be back in time for when the Premier League resumes
