From Measuring Light to Understanding It
Why LRS is Building an “Emotion-Aware Light” Ecosystem

For the past two decades, our industry has been obsessed with efficiency, controls and ambience.
Important, yes — but one key question has remained underexplored:

How does light quantitatively influence our biology, emotions and performance?

At Lighting Recipe Studio (LRS), this is exactly the gap we are working to close.
Not just how bright the light is, but how suitable it is for the human body and mind.

What we do at LRS

We focus on three pillars:
• 🧠 Brain & emotion lighting research
Using fMRI, EEG and HRV to understand how different spectra and dynamics affect brain regions related to mood, stress and cognition.
• 🌞 Circadian & healthy light environments
Translating CIE S026, WELL and other standards into practical design rules using metrics such as m-EDI, EML and CS.
• 📡 In.Licht measurement & data platform
With In.Licht Ultra / Pro / Well we measure spectra, flicker, glare risk and IAQ, turning “invisible risks” into visible data.

In short: we don’t just sell hardware.
We build the recipes and intelligence that make light healthier, smarter and more human-centric.

Our three-layer technology stack

1️⃣ Sensing & data — seeing light clearly
In.Licht devices quantify:
• Spectral power distribution (SPD)
• Illuminance, CCT, CRI / Rf / Rg
• Circadian metrics (m-EDI, EML, CS)
• Flicker metrics (waveform, SVM / Pst LM ready)
• Age-related visual adjustments
• IAQ (CO₂, TVOC, temperature, humidity) via In.Licht Well

We move beyond “xx lux” to a full picture of what this light does to eyes, biology and comfort.

2️⃣ Algorithms — from measuring light to understanding people

Built with universities and hospitals, our models include:
• Circadian models
Multi-spectral databases that predict the impact of real spectra on biological rhythms, applied in offices, schools and healthcare.
• Emotion Navigation models
Experiments linking CCT / colour / dynamics / flicker to brain activity, physiology and self-reported mood,
decomposing emotion into dimensions like happiness, arousal and serenity.
• Teacher–Proxy–Operational architecture
• Teacher: fMRI reveals true brain responses.
• Proxy: EEG, HRV, facial cues become practical signals.
• Operational: in real spaces, the system can steer light using environment data + these proxies.

The practical goal is simple:

“I want calm / focus / recovery”
becomes a command the lighting system can actually understand and execute.

3️⃣ Systems & applications — making it real in buildings
• Open APIs and standard protocols (DALI, Zigbee, BLE Mesh, etc.) to connect In.Licht data and our “light recipe engine” into BMS / LMS and smart-home platforms.
• Health & “emotion light” reports aligned with WELL, LEED and Good Light guidelines.
• Reusable scene modules for focus work, agile meetings, nurse stations, waiting areas, pre-sleep transition, and more.

IP as a moat, not a vanity metric

We are building a portfolio of 60+ patents and applications across China, Taiwan, the US and Europe, focused on:
• Sensing & devices
• Algorithms & databases
• Platforms & cloud
• Scene-based applications

Hardware can be copied.
But the language and logic that define “good light” – and the way it maps to data, algorithms and scenes – is where we build our moat.

Who we’d like to partner with

This post is not only an introduction. It’s also an open invitation.

We’re keen to collaborate with:
1. Research partners – universities, hospitals, labs
2. Technology licensees & co-IP partners – manufacturers wanting differentiated “healthy / emotion light” capabilities
3. Platform partners – BMS / LMS / smart-home / smart-hospital platforms
4. Solution partners – lighting brands, integrators, vertical specialists in healthcare, education, real estate, hospitality, senior living
5. Strategic transformation partners – companies moving from “selling fixtures” to “selling light as a service”
6. Standards & industry bodies – shaping the next generation of healthy / circadian / emotion-aware lighting standards

If you’re interested in exploring how emotion-aware light recipes could fit into your products, platforms or projects, we’d love to talk.

Let’s move the industry from “light that can be seen”
to light that genuinely understands – and supports – the people living in it. 💡🌱

Thrilled to see In.Licht joining this year’s Lux Futurum Forum 2025 as an official sponsor and exhibitor. 🌏✨

As the theme “A Future Where East Meets West” beautifully suggests, this forum represents more than just lighting design — it’s about dialogue, science, and shared vision. From Tokyo to Milan, from New York to Shanghai, light connects us through culture, health, and human experience.

I’m particularly looking forward to learning from the outstanding speakers, including:
Colleen Harper (IES Executive Director), Daan Roosegaarde, Satoshi Chikayama, Amardeep Dugar, Martin & Ingmar Klaasen, Dominique Amblard, Katia Kolovea, and leading Chinese designers such as 吕邵苍 Lv Shaocang, 王海松 Wang Haisong, and 谢天 Xie Tian — all shaping the future of meaningful and human-centric illumination.

At our In.Licht booth, we’ll be showcasing how field measurement bridges science and design — bringing WELL, CIE S 026, and circadian-based insights into real-world spaces through In.Licht Ultra, Pro, and Well devices.
Our mission remains clear:

“Stop guessing light. Start measuring.”

🌟 Celebrating Legacy, Lighting the Future

Honored to return to my design roots and celebrate the 70th Anniversary of Chung Yuan Christian University (CYCU) and the 40th Anniversary of the Department of Interior Design, where so many bright minds and warm memories were shaped.

This time, I was not only a guest — but also a collaborator.
Lighting Recipe Studio is proud to support the planning of CYCU’s upcoming Human-Centric Lighting Lab, a visionary step to bring together science, design, and wellness.

From standards to strategies, from spectrum to circadian health —
I’ve spent my career advocating that light is not just about seeing, but about feeling, healing, and living.

Grateful for the invitation, the recognition, and most importantly, the shared mission to empower the next generation of designers to shape healthier spaces through better light.

Let’s keep building the bridge between design education and lighting innovation—together. ✨

Is your baby's night light really sleep-friendly? 🌙👶

Using In.licht Ultra, I measured the lighting environment during my baby's nighttime sleep. The results? While the light seemed soft to the eye, key metrics revealed its impact on circadian rhythms—CCT, EML, and CAF levels all play a role in melatonin production and sleep quality.
Light isn't just about brightness—it shapes our biological clock. With Ultra, I can fine-tune the lighting to support a healthier day-night routine for my baby. Because good sleep starts with good light. ✨💤

🌟 Lighting Analysis: Hotel Room in Taipei 🌟

Excellent color rendering with warm light creates a cozy and inviting ambiance, perfect for unwinding. On the other hand, it lacks sufficient support for productivity and circadian rhythm…says it should be brighter in daytime. BTW, the measured percent flicker might cause discomfort for brainwave…it's invisible but crucial.

Brought the In.Licht Ultra to a restaurant to measure its light environment, and the results were fascinating. The ambiance leaned heavily towards warm yellow tones, which created a cozy and inviting atmosphere. However, some metrics, such as color accuracy and flicker percentage, suggest areas where lighting adjustments could enhance the dining experience.
