Beginning in the 1960s, Hannah and Barbera's cartoons about Tom the Cat and Jerry the Mouse began to appear frequently on television. However, these releases were remade due to "political correctness", or controversial fragments were cut by the Chuck Jones team[24]. The most important change was the change of Tom's owner, Mommy Two Slippers, who was replaced by a young Irish woman and re-voiced by actress June Foray. However, this version was later abandoned; soon Mommy Two Slippers was left, but she was voiced by Tia Vidale. This was done to remove the stereotypical African American voice.

The next 34 episodes of the animated series were produced by Chuck Jones' Sib Tower 12 Productions (later renamed Visual Arts) from 1963 to 1967[5]. In these short series, the main attention was paid to humor. In addition, the design of the main characters was changed: the cat Tom's eyebrows were changed, the thickness of which was increased, the color of the fur was changed to gray, his ears acquired a sharp shape, and his tail became longer; for Jerry the mouse, the artists changed the size of the eyes and ears, and also changed the color of the coat to chocolate. These changes were positively received by viewers, who considered these episodes to be better than Gene Deitch's. Particularly praised was the parody of the MGM intro, in which the cat Tom portrayed the roar of the lion Leo

However, the series created by Rembrandt Films proved to be commercially successful and were released until 1962[21]. The reason for the termination of the creation of new series was the dismissal of the head of MGM, Joseph Vogel, who agreed to restore the franchise [17]. These issues have been shown on television more than once and reprinted on various media.

According to the director, the management of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer showed the team several episodes of the animated series, created by William Hanna and Joseph Barbera, and set aside 10 thousand dollars for the creation of each series[17]. The small budget affected the quality of the episodes: the characters' gestures were performed at high speed, and the choppy animation showed blurry heavy spots to the audience. The soundtrack was presented with strange music with futuristic effects. All this made the cartoon in many ways strange and unusual. Many critics and fans consider these series to be the worst in the history of the animated series

After the closure of the animation department, the executives from MGM decided to restore the animated series again and commissioned the Czechoslovak studio Rembrandt Films to create 13 episodes of Tom and Jerry[19][20][21]. These short films were produced by company founder William Snyder (English) Russian; directed by animator Gene Deitch; screenplay by Eli Bauer; the lead animators were Liu Garnier and Gary Mooney; the composer was Stefan Konichek; actor Allen Swift voiced all the characters[19][21][22]. According to Gene Deitch himself, even animators from the former MGM cartoon division helped create new short cartoons. However, since Rembrandt Films was located behind the Iron Curtain, the creators deliberately changed their names and surnames in the credits: for example, composer Stefan Konicek changed his name to Steven, and Vaclav Lidl was listed as Victor Little

Like people, the main characters have their enemies and friends. For example, the cat Butch, the dog Spike and his son, the puppy Tyke, often joke about Tom, and his nephew, a little mouse named Nibbles (Tuffy), the Quacker duck (moreover, during the course of the series, the Quaker hatches from the egg several times) and a canary, and in one episode, Jerry has a strong cousin, at the sight of which all the cats scatter in all directions. In most episodes, the characters do not speak: it is all reduced to cries of pain or nervous swallowing, but in some cases there is a full-fledged, albeit short, dialogue.

In most episodes, the action takes place in a small town, in the house of Mommy Two Slippers (in some episodes she is absent, in later episodes she is replaced by a girl). However, in some cases, the characters can live on a desert island, sail on cruise ships, relax on the beach, etc. In the story, Tom tries his best to catch the mouse, but he almost never succeeds[6]. Nevertheless, in some series, the characters get along quite peacefully with each other and can help each other at the most difficult moment

"Tom and Jerry" quickly gained recognition from the audience and gained popularity around the world. However, many episodes have been criticized for depicting the violence and brutality of the main characters, as well as for the weak plot in some short films[5]. Nevertheless, in the entire history of its existence, the cartoon received 7 Oscars for Best Animated Short Film.

Since the 1970s, spin-offs featuring Tom the Cat and Jerry the Mouse have been produced by Hanna-Barbera and Filmation. In 1992, the first full-length cartoon of the same name was shown in cinemas, where the main characters are voiced and talk throughout the tape. Later, the creators decided to return to the style of the first episodes, releasing short episodes "Cat's Mansion" and "Karate Guard" for the Boomerang channel [3]. To date, the rights to the animated series are owned by Warner Bros.

The pilot issue of the project "The Cat Gets a Kick" was released on February 10, 1940 [2]. Following their success, the Hanna-Barbera duo wrote a further 113 episodes that were screened in theaters before feature films until 1958. After the closure of the animation department of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, from the 1960s, the cartoon was created at the Rembrandt Films studios (English) Russian. and MGM Animation/Visual Arts (eng.)rus. (which is also known as Sib Tower 12 Productions) directed by Gene Deitch and Chuck Jones respectively.
