Rita Marley, who supported and accompanied her husband all her life, after his death tried to start a solo career. On May 4, 1981, Bob Marley was baptized at the Ethiopian Orthodox Church in Kingston by Archbishop Abuna Yishak of the Western Hemisphere. In 1980, Marley performed in Zimbabwe, which gained independence from Great Britain that year: by that time, Marley was a symbol of African unity, especially in former colonial countries (even before Zimbabwe, Gabon became the first African country where Bob Marley performed in the same year) . This was followed by a successful tour of Germany. However, the planned American tour was interrupted when, after holding two concerts at Madison Square Garden, the singer passed out while jogging in New York's Central Park. In the winter of 1980, Bob Marley underwent treatment in Munich with cancer specialist Josef Issels, but to no avail. As a result of chemotherapy, Marley's hair, woven into dreadlocks, began to fall out, and they had to be cut.

In 1968, the Wailers established a relationship with producer Danny Sims and recorded a lot of new material with him, although their collaboration lasted only a year. He was replaced by Lee Scratch Perry, under whose direction the musicians made new versions of their most famous songs: "My Cup", "Duppy Conqueror", "Soul Almighty", "Small Ahe" and others. With the help of backing band Upsetters, which brought in Lee Perry, Wailers added a distinctive feature to the reggae sound that allowed him to enter the global music market with confidence: original rhythms, powerful vocals and ingenious production.

In early 1966, despite the initial success and about 70 ready-made songs, the Wailers fled. In February, Bob Marley married Rita Anderson, lead singer of Soulettes, and moved with her to the United States, where his mother lived. The young family settled in New York, and Bob found a job in a factory. His enthusiasm was barely enough for six months. Returning to Jamaica in October 1966, he resuscitated the Wailers with Livingston and Tosh. All three musicians by that time had joined the Rastafarians, adherents of the Rastafarian faith that dominated Jamaica, which greatly influenced Bob Marley's worldview and all his musical work. In 1962, Bob Marley recorded his first single, "Judge Not", but failed to share the royalties with producer Leslie Kong and severed ties with him. In 1963, Marley formed his first band, Teenagers. The band members included Peter Tosh, Bunny Livingston, Junior Braithwaite, Benerly Kelso and Cherry Smith. The band changed their name several times, called Wailing Rudeboys, until they finally became The Wailers.
